Names of victims from Nich. Allswood camp flood are Ted Ox, Mike Colwell, Chas Toffer, Wa Gould. W S McHenry, Thos Simpson frost bitten. Horace J Whitney and Charles Peabody found dead, Alfred Crissey frost bitten losing a foot. Peabody and Crissey were in a tree. Crissey rescued Peabody then died. Ed Reynolds buried Wednesday amid mournful procession.
A St Paul Pioneer story retells Red Horse’s account of the Reno and Greasy Grass fight. It identifies Captain T. H. French in buckskin as the bravest officer who saved Reno’s detachment, though Reno’s official report omits him. The piece calls for recognition and a possible military court inquiry into the omission, arguing the hero deserves proper acknowledgment.
The Whitehead party reports slow movement toward the Hill after reaching Creek 104 miles from Bismarck. A stage station on the east bank houses three men and sits eighty five miles from Bismarck per the company survey. The train: 59 wagons, two men, five women, two girls and two boys. One wagon and some freight left at Casey. Trade delays from melting frost and rising streams slow progress. no Indians seen yet.
