Yellowstone steamer news and river navigation doubts in 1877

Notes from Bufor dated May 5 1877 report the Yellowstone steamer arriving at 2 40 p m and leaving at 2 p m the next day with growing doubts about navigating the Yellowstone River this season. River and mountain men debate a June rise and potential navigation depending on rains and snow. Stages to run daily between Bismarck and Deadwood

Black Hills stages carrying U. S. mail and express run three times weekly between Bismarck and Deadwood and will begin daily service in a few days. Blakely Carpenter and Clark report tri weekly stages are overcrowded and have ordered stock for extra service to boost trade.

Freight Rates to the Hills Cut By Northwestern Transport

Northwestern Transportation Co lowers freight to Deadwood to four to four fifty per cwt. Gilmer of Gilmer Saulsbury Co praises the Bismarck route and expands stage lines but finds region crowded and shifts focus. Proctor and Bailey Landre rebuild their store.
