Survivors L A Paddock and Henry Burch recount the perilous trek from Cannon Ball to Hit with three ponies in a blinding snow storm. Raymond and Camels were later buried. Tyler's body still missing.

Long Civil War era dispatch details troop movements of the Seventh Cavalry from Fort Totten to a camp near Fort Rice with about sixty men and officers, lists arrivals from Bisbee and Black Hills, and notes marching orders, supplies, and payments. A history of Spotted Tail's change of heart toward whites centers on his daughter who loved a Fort Laramie officer, died of a broken heart, and spurred the chief to seek peace. Her coffin was brought to a council to witness the vow, and her grave was later moved near Spotted Tail Agency. General Crook later commanded forces near Red Cloud Agency on Oct. 26, 1876, praising Spotted Tail as a rare Sioux leader willing to befriend the whites.
