Incident reports a Ongston area boy who discharged a firearm while seated in a wagon. The accident occurred during a daytime event, with authorities investigating to determine how the gun was fired. No other injuries are mentioned and the boy is reported stable.
A fatal shooting occurred near Boulder when Fryer fired a gun while Drayden Mendenhall and Carney were in a wagon. John Mendenhall was killed, with injuries to Treskull and others. The victim, 19, was taken to the undertaker in Livingston for burial. his father, a business partner, moved from Springdale years ago.
York September 22 The steel stock list opened with little adverse influence on the market. United Steel showed a loss up to a half point while Bethlehem Steel and Crumble edged higher. Overall, early activity was unsettled but some groups remained steady or firm.
The Milwaukee markets report heavy cattle shipments this year with fifty thousand head moved to eastern pasture areas. Rail lines indicate extensive consignments, with cars carrying cattle and sheep continuing to be sent eastward under the current schedule and part of ongoing distribution efforts.
Miss Nell Allen daughter of Mr and Mrs H C Allen married Mr Harry Just son of Mr and Mrs H J Just of Olympia at her parents home. Rev W A Major officiated in a garden like setting of pink and white asters and autumn foliage. The bride wore ivory satin with silver lace and long tulle veil. The couple will reside in the Lloyd Apartments after a short honeymoon.
Federal Judge Landis began a sweeping campaign against Chicago saloons by holding 16 men to the grand jury on bonds of 15000 each in beer smuggling cases tied to transport across the Wisconsin Illinois line. Included is Jim O Leary, a noted saloonkeeper and bookmaker, who refused to answer about beer purchases from Miller Brewing representatives at Milwaukee. The others are truck drivers and bartenders connected with seizures from Kenosha Wis to Zion City Ill.
Forest district No 1 reports this season burned about 1.4 million acres from 2,048 fires, versus 2.77 million acres from 1,736 fires in 1910. Protection costs reached 1.62 million dollars, about six cents per acre, with ongoing fires expected to be controlled.
Seth Bullock, lifelong friend of Theodore Roosevelt, dies at his Deadwood home after a several week illness. He was a Black Hills pioneer and aged 60.
General John J. Pershing returned to a solemn House chamber welcome in Washington. Congress and the nation extended thanks to Pershing and the army, with brief ceremony, single flag, and standing ovation as he spoke of sacrifice, graves in France, and the unity of achievement beyond party lines.
W A Frink a taxicab driver is held after the coroner jury found Charles Van Houten Jr 16 was killed by a car though the driver remains unknown Evidence at inquest pointed to Frink as the driver whose vehicle struck the bicyclist leading to his detention and ongoing investigation in Billings.
Friends and patrons of local education will welcome the new teachers of the year in the High School Auditorium at eight Friday evening. The program begins at nine with violin solo by George Muse and several songs and welcomes by Prof. W. C. Ryan, Miss Aspen, Miss Alice Mo, Prof. E. A. Erickson, Miss Smith, and others. The public is urged to attend.
New York September 22 The preliminary clash in the industrial struggle between labor unions and United States Steel Corporation affects about a half million workers. In Chicago and Pittsburgh districts many plants closed or operated, Bethlehem Steel employees delaying joining the strike, while others stayed open. Cleveland Youngstown and Steubenville reported mixed statuses with several mills closed and many workers out. Outside major centers conditions were near normal though notable action occurred at Johnstown Buffalo and Pueblo with substantial worker mobilizations and plant suspensions.
Sheriffs and police along the railroad from Harrowton to Miles City seek the person who hurled a newborn from a speeding train near Gage. The baby, found by a section crew about 9 am, was wrapped in blood soaked cloths in a paper bundle. Authorities believe the act occurred while the train neared Gage station around 2 am Wednesday. The infant could not be more than 24 hours old and the case is being treated as a brutal murder with multiple clues held by the sheriff’s force.
Cincinnati won the coin toss for the opening game of the world series in a meeting of baseball officials. The schedule has two games in Cincinnati, three in the other city, then two back in Cincinnati. Umpires for the series were Nallin Evans Rigler Quigley with Louis Comiskey tossing the coin.
Helena will host Montana’s centralized program to place disabled veterans in new vocations. Four full time staff will coordinate from Great Falls, Billings, Missoula, and Helena. Lieut Laughlin and Lieut Mitchell from the war department emergency employment bureau join John Batton of Minneapolis, overseeing federal placements for vocational education after a Billings conference.
Fargo N D September 19 Colonel R Harts pilot of the Martin bombing plant arrived at 6 15 tonight on a trip around the rim of the United States. The distance from Montevideo Minn to Fargo was covered in two hours 44 minutes. Coronel Harts will leave tomorrow proceeding further.
A large crowd gathered for the opening day of a welcome home event despite forecasts of a storm. Organizers urged participation and volunteers helped run activities as the day proceeded.
Sweet Grass county celebrated returning soldiers in a Woman's club led welcome. A Butte aviation school plane piloted by Heasler and Rees entertained crowds, landing at Second avenue east. Mr Schmidt was knocked insensible during a landing but recovered. Mayor Lowry presided at a 4 PM Auditorium program with notable speakers. 161 veterans signed the American Legion roster and elected officers Baskett post commander Lamb vice commander Davia adjutant Amery finance officer Claiborn historian.
Theodore Roosevelt Jr spoke in Helena addressing a packed auditorium. He urged unity for veterans in the next decade and supported the American Legion while criticizing Bolsheviks IWWs and anarchist criminals. He called for action to curb riots and disorder and endorsed profit sharing and a middle path over radical shifts.
Dance halls in the federal district will pay 10 percent tax on each ticket sold instead of a flat 10 percent on gross receipts. The new rule ends commutation ticket books and imposes 3 cent per ticket pricing for booklets, as explained by Collector John P. Carter.
