Hunter Mistakes Horse for Elk Near Cedar Lake

Missoula resident Missoula-Lawrence O Bleness, 34, of Libby remained in serious condition at St Patrick's Hospital after surgery to remove a bullet. He was wounded Monday while elk hunting 30 miles west of Missoula in the Cedar Log lake area when a companion, mistaking the horse for an elk, fired. The .300 Savage bullet ricocheted from the saddle tree into his hip. he was flown out of the mountains by ambulance helicopter from Missoula Monday afternoon.

Saturday White Cane Tag Day Helps Montana Blind

Big Timber Boy Scouts will run the downtown tag day to support the Montana Association for the Blind. Proceeds fund a free five week summer school for the adult blind at Montana State College Bozeman costing about 300 dollars per student. The 18th session closed July 15 with 29 students from multiple towns.

FFA Officers Attend Training Meeting in Belgrade

Charles B. McComb of the McComb family left for Oakland to resume duties in the U S Navy after visiting relatives. Gary Refsland enlisted in the Navy, reported to Butte for a physical, then traveled to Salt Lake City and flew to the naval training base in San Diego California for training.

Julian Helvik Dies of Cancer at 69 on Big Timber Ranch

Karl Julian Helvik 69 died Saturday at his Big Timber area ranch after years of illness. Funeral service was held Tuesday at the Big Timber Lutheran Church with Rev. Ocee Johnson officiating. Surviving are his widow Sofia, six sons Jacob H and Julian Helvik Jr of Big Timber, Sigmund Sidney Hans of Livingston and Carl of Helena, nine grandchildren, a brother Omund, and a host of relatives. He was born July 12, 1893 in Helvik Norway and came to Montana in 1924.

High School Curtis Drive Underway

Student salesmen at Curtis High School raised 1530 in the first week. Shirley Kjarmo led with 84 in sales and earned a jewelry box. She also won a $5 daily drawing for hitting the 13 quota. Two subscriptions earned ice cream party via J G Holman Curtis representative. Each dollar sold earned a credit toward special prizes.

Family Vacation Trip From Minnesota to Alabama

Mrs. Theo Grumm travels with her mother Mrs John Larson and companions Jerry McKay and Robert Nucey. They left Sunday by car for Pine Island Minnesota to visit Mrs Larson's sister for three to four days before continuing to Dalesville Alabama to spend two weeks with Mike Grumm and family. Mike serves in the Army in Alabama.

Sweet Grass County backs cancer society memorial drive

Mrs Ella Adam appointed president of the Sweet Grass county unit of the American Cancer Society with Mrs Ed Holmberg succeeding as memorial chairman. She notes year round work in research education and aid and invites contributions through either woman for memorials or other donations.

Services Today For Emil Johnson

Emil Johnson died early Monday at Community Hospital after a stroke. Born in 1880 in Flekkefjord Norway he came to Montana in 1898 and lived in Melville Great Falls and Big Timber. Survived by his widow a son two daughters six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren a brother and sister in Norway. Funeral Thursday at 2 pm from Lowry Chapel with Rev Ocee Johnson officiating. Bodies encased in ice recover four Austrian WWI soldiers

Remains of four Austrian soldiers killed in World War I, frozen in ice for 46 years, were recovered on a 10,700 foot peak in the Adamello Range in Trent Italy. The same mountain yielded two other Austrian soldiers last week.

Twenty three T-Bone CowBelles held a directors and officers fall meeting in Columbus on Sept. 12 with Mrs. John Yost as president and Mrs. Howard Hanson as secretary. Anniversary Party for E. O. Hansons Held on Sunday

About 100 relatives and friends gathered at the Lutheran Parish hall to celebrate Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Hanson’s twenty fifth wedding anniversary.
