Serving Big Timber and Sweet Grass County Montana the first football game has been played and won decisively and another the first home game will be played this Friday in Big Timber. The girls play basketball this week also. For more information on both see page 3. Also this fall brings a series of workshops and classes to the city. For stories on the first of these see page 8.
Big Timber Grade School substitutes will earn 30.00 a day, up 5.00 from 25.00, after a Sept 9 school board vote. Jim Sandsness broke a tie in favor of the higher raise. budget impact is about 200 to 300 more yearly. Superintendent Argenbright noted the raise reflects merit, not demand, and mill levy is down aiding taxpayers.
City Council on Monday night approved two ordinances to ban dumping on public and private property and prohibit possession of open alcoholic beverages on public streets. A leash law was placed on April ballot amid water sewer extension talks and six Sweet Grass lots were annexed.
SGHS Board postponed decisions on siding for the gymnasium and bus garage while handling routine matters. Principal Vance Ramberg reported 220 students enrolled. a schedule change to swap third and fourth periods appears to resolve lunchroom conflicts. The board kept current attendance policy and approved funding for chorus travel, gear, eye testing costs, and music department bass guitar.
Funds for the Overland Golf Course show $75 825 pledged and $55 735 collected as completion nears. BOR funds cover course construction with club house plans to follow, funded by matching BOR support. Volunteers and donors including Glen Westerfelt and several residents are thanked for dirt, soil, and log contributions and new gifts are listed.

Meeting of Board of Directors and officers of Sweet Grass County was held last Wednesday at the Courthouse. Plans for the 1976 fund drive were made. The 1976 fund drive will start November 1, 1976. Existing board members were reelected. Officers were reelected. Articles of Incorporation filed in June 1976. A new symbol drawn by Jack Hines adopted with slogan Give Just Once. Next meeting September 22 to plan the annual fund drive. Volunteers welcomed for county captains in each of seven city areas.
Local residents are told not to alarm when a fire siren sounds Saturday at 2 p.m. for a yearly simulated rescue by Pioneer Home staff and emergency crews. One wing will be evacuated for a role play by high school students with the Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance Service SG Sheriffs Dept and the Sheriffs Posse taking part. Fire chief Dennis Beer says the drill trains responders and helps create a procedure sheet for future emergencies.
The Pioneer urges all voting-age residents in the county to register by October third to be eligible for the November election. Thirteen days remain to visit the County Clerk and Recorder's office in the Court House to register or re register after moving. Time is now to act and add register to vote to next week’s tasks.
The Governor's Conference on Montana Rangeland will run September 22–23 in Billings at the Ramada Inn starting at 10 a.m. The event, chaired by Tun Sparks, stresses rangeland as a renewable asset and outlines privately-owned lands as producers of 90 percent of livestock grazing and 65 percent of wildlife grazing. Gov. Thomas L. Judge will deliver the keynote.
