Ellen McDonnell manages Republican Women’s club duties for the fair and is praised for composure after being excluded at a rally. The note emphasizes calm leadership, a warm spring, and an unusually dry spell raising fire risk as antelope hunting nears and ranchers in area 18 post land to reduce fire danger until moisture returns.
A traveling salesman rolled into Big Timber selling cafe menus and similar items via church calendars and lodge notices. Buyers paid modest sums, received only receipts, and the promised advertising never appeared. The Lions Club secretary received a warning about a similar con in the area, linked to calendars and cook look ads through local churches. The operator may have moved toward the Stillwater area.

A. A. O'Claire of the Montana Fish and Game Dept warns all antelope areas face a critical fire situation as the hunting season starts September 10 in 45 dry zones. He urges postponement is not a fire shield and calls full hunter cooperation to prevent crop loss, requesting permission to hunt on private land and strict fire precautions in the field.
Walter Huff man of Sky Flight inc. arranged a Montana State college agronomy expert to inspect Rescue wheat sprayed on the Albert Stuber ranch. The Bozeman specialist found yield loss and possible chemical impact but could not blame the spray definitively. Moisture or climate could also affect the variety, so growers should handle Rescue wheat with special care.
Alfred Anderson and Miss Dorothy Jean O'Leary exchanged vows in a 4 pm double ring ceremony at the Big Timber Lutheran church. Attended by about 75 guests, the couple planned a Grand Teton honeymoon with both families from Springdale.
Beise Idaho state land department placed signs around the new asphalt surface near the state house on Wednesday. The notices read Keep off Remove no timber Graze no stock without permit No mining and custodians aimed to keep people off the area with the only signs available.
A Northern Pacific wrecker overturned near Voges bridge injuring and fatally burning fireman John Mittelstedter 49 of Livingston. He died in a Livingston hospital after being scalded by steam from a ruptured pipe. Engineer survived with minor injuries as rescuers pulled Mittelstedter from the cab exit. The derailment damaged no track but required a new line for recovery work. Traffic here remained lightly affected as salvage operations continued.
This year’s grade school enrollment stands at 278, a slight decline from last year, per Supt. A. C. McDonald. Grade counts include 35 first, 39 second, 40 third, 34 fourth, 29 fifth, 37 sixth, 35 seventh, and 29 eighth graders. Teaching staff listed with names for each grade and music.
Congressman Fjare travels to Great Falls for a House sub committee on Indian affairs hearings led by chairman James Halley of Florida. He paused in Hobson and plans visits to Shelby Browning Cut Bank Conrad Chateau and Livingston in the coming days, inspecting Benton Lake wildlife refuge en route.
The Firemen, league leaders all season, beat the Moose 15 to 13 to capture the championship. The Legion finished third and the Lions fourth as Huidekoper cup was presented by Col. Huidekoper. Moose had earlier defeated the Legion 15 to 8 to reach the final. Other scores included Firemen 16 Lions 9 and Moose 15 Legion 9. Team rosters list Ross Snyder as manager and players including Joe Mahlum Henry Klindt Johnnie Jacobs Ray Bieber Jack Berg Leonard Mahlum Fred Olness Arthur Boettcher L Nelson Jack Trimble Clarence Reidelbach Dr Jim Jackson.
The Montana Fish and Game ward lens reported 99 arrests in July for fishing and hunting violations. Of these, 75 were fishing cases, 9 hunting infractions, and 13 for falsely swearing to obtain a resident license, plus two miscellaneous. Seventy percent involved non residents from 12 states. six Montanans faced possession of illegally taken game meat, two for discharging firearms on a game preserve. Two counts cited insufficient life saving equipment and three for taking fish by nontraditional means. sixteen licenses were revoked.
About 225 pheasants were planted last week in Sweet Grass county by the fish and game department. Bob Green of Warm Springs hatchery and a state college biologist distributed birds with C. E. Smart noting the birds were in fine condition. None were lost in 15 crates. Additional pheasants were planted at Andres Launch Ranch in Springdale and Lavold Brothers ranch on Otter Creek.

Jeanne Huyser named student council representative Ed Lomeland elected president in absentia Fred Olness vice president June Strand secretary Elizabeth Steensland president John Green vice Barbara Holland vice Sharon McKenzie secretary Jerry Long treasurer. Freshmen will elect officers later.
Mrs. Mary Lamp 82 longtime Big Timber resident died at 8 30 AM in the Community hospital after a heart attack last Thursday. She had been ill for years. Funeral services set for Saturday at 2 PM at Lowry Funeral Home with Rev. J D Lindley of the EUB church officiating.
A full staff of teachers will open the Big Timber Lutheran Sunday school this Sunday September 11 at 9 45 with classes for all ages from three year olds to adults. Leading kindergarten are Miss Joyce Hauge four year olds Mrs John Herries five year olds and Mrs Dean Lowry.
Enrollment on opening day reaches 200 again this year with some students not yet reported. Principal A R Collins expects final enrollment near 205. Last year's figure was 201 on Sept 15. Class breakdown shows freshmen 58, sophomores 60, juniors 40, seniors 42.
Ellis Faw won the senior division and George Bjorndal topped the junior division in a Saturday tractor contest held with the fair. Seventeen drivers competed, nine junior and eight senior, with Ken Davenport and Stan Jacobson as judges. Competitors used Ferguson Allis-Chalmers Massey Harris and Ford tractors.
Hot weekend temps drew large crowds to the Annanal County Fair with strong sale prices at the auction. County Agent F B Peterson credited sustained community support as blue ribbon beef and calves averaged 27.68 cents, red ribbons 25.95, and white ribbons 22.41 with an overall 25.18 cents.
The Rev. Stanley Brown, new dean of the chapel at Rocky Mountain college, will preach at the Congregational church Sunday on The Word, the Life and the Light. He left a Northern Illinois Methodist church to take the post after Rev. Fred Kuhns. This summer he travels Montana promoting Rocky Mountain College. A family picnic at the park after services is planned for attendees.
In an all school assembly on Wednesday, students voted to allocate most of Curtis subscription funds to buy wire for football field lights. Remaining funds will support other activities. If plans succeed, lights may be ready for the September 29 Columbus game, with the opener against Harlowton this Friday.
Plans for the Sunday school opening at the Congregational church were finalized by the Christian Education committee and staff on Tuesday evening. Mrs. O. J. Paulson will serve as superintendent with Mrs. Paul Deverle as secretary and treasurer. Primary teachers include Mrs. Forrest Ullman Mrs. Don Cameron and Mrs. Charles Surface in the junior intermediate group are Mrs. Henry Klindt Walt Huffman Miss Gertrude Conwell and Mrs. Walt Braaten with two more staff additions expected.
The Montana fish and game commission ordered the Judith mountains north of highway 87 Fergus county closed to mountain grouse hunting during the 1955 upland bird season. Director A A O'Claire said the move protects wild turkeys planted in the area last winter.
Almost half of the 1955 Sweet Grass county high school seniors have enrolled in colleges. Several boys plan to enlist in the armed services. Keith Engle Everett Jones LaVern Savchenko attend Bozeman State College.
Postoffice workers in Big Timber received recognition for using sick leave only for its intended purpose. S G Schwartz sent 1000 hour club certificates to L H Bryan and L D Severance, with Mrs Paul Ballard also earning 500 hours. C S Flattum, Grey Cliff postmaster, received a 1000 hour certificate, and Mrs Victor Allman, Melville postmistress, recently earned a similar citation.
