Convention Marks Harmony and Speed at County Meeting

The republican county convention convened last Tuesday showing unified opinion and orderly progress. Chairman Brownlee opened the session with Leon Show named temporary secretary after the organization vote and temporary leadership established.

Walsh in high favor Helena man unanimous preference for United States senator

Helena voters favor Thomas J. Walsh for the U S Senate with all factions united. Sydney C. Lanner of Big Timber named associate justice of the supreme court beating Jesse B. Route of Silver Bow. Judge Sanner leads the Miles City slate with 3784 to 714 votes and unites the ticket. Representatives named are Tom Stout of Lewistown and John M. Evans of Missoula.

Wheat Yields Exciting in Montana County Area

Threshing in the northern county shows strong yield and quality with Sweet Grass near top among Montana wheat counties. In Big Coulee near Seventy-nine a 360 acre field yielded 9,340 bushels of first class grain, while a 750 acre field nearby is expected to perform similarly. Turkey Red winter wheat on new ground reportedly yields 18 to 31 bushels per acre.

Sweet Grass County Fair Exhibition Opens with Notable Displays

The Sweet Grass County Fair continues with high quality exhibits across departments. Floral hall shows top farm and orchard products and improved fruit and vegetable displays. Racing draws praise with fast horses and competitive times, while political and local nominations proceed with multiple ballots and acclamations for county officials and delegates.

Entrymen Saved by Borah Amendment

The Borah amendment to the sundry civil bill protects homestead entrymen who filed before June 6 1912 but have not final proof. It allows proving up under either the old five year or the new three year law, reversing department restrictions that forced a choice by Oct 4. The interior department will revise its instructions to honor the entrymen option and avoid prejudice for those on land longer than three years.

W R Allen Withdraws from Governor Nomination Bid

Lieut Governor W R Allen withdraws from the Republican race for Montana governor before the Great Falls convention. He informs J B Goose of Deer Lodge county that he will not seek the nomination, citing mature consideration and gratitude to supporters in Deer Lodge and statewide.

Flax acreage in Sweet Grass county questioned

W R Stokes disputes a Helena estimate of flax area in Sweet Grass county claiming about ten times the reported 1000 acres actually sown. He cites local fields in Big Coulee and nearby sections with growers listing well over 1000 acres. Stokes estimates typical yields from ten to twenty five bushels per acre, averaging around fourteen.

Montana State Normal college opens sixteenth year under President Monroe

The Montana State Normal college in Dillon begins its sixteenth year with President J. E. Monroe leading as new executive. The campus features two large buildings, 34 rooms, a 600 seat auditorium, eight thousand volume library, and dormitories for 120 women. The training school operates with public schools under Dr. Grant E. Finch, and the faculty includes Walter Scott as new physics and chemistry assistant. An ungraded rural training department will be added to expand teacher preparation.

Judge Rice Posts Two Boulder River Trout Records

Judge Rice of Deadwood S D vacationing with Lee Smoot on the Boulder caught two large trout last Tuesday. One weighed a little over six pounds and the other a little over five pounds. Fish were sent to Big Timber to W D Richards and The Pioneer. Photographs by Kauffman document the catch as evidence for his fishing tales.
