Justice Hugo L. Black disclosed he joined the Ku Klux Klan about 15 years ago and later resigned. He urged the nation to judge his fitness for the Supreme Court by his Senate record, denying any sympathy with Klan or efforts to limit religious freedom. The radio address was given from Claude E. Hamilton Jr.’s home as President Roosevelt and aides listened.

Columbia Falls Officer Shot by Wanted Man
Leslie A. Green town marshal of Columbia Falls was shot and killed near Cedar Lake seven miles north. A posse led by Sheriff Robinson hunted Charles Mure, charged with burning Clarence Firestone’s cabin. Justice Caverly reported the shooting occurred as he approached Brown and Mure fleeing.
