From horse thief to bootlegger in Sweet Grass County
The Pioneer notes Sheriff Brannin’s three years nine months in office saw horse and cattle thefts rise in Sweet Grass County, with higher theft rates than five neighboring counties. It argues bootlegging now attracts former thieves, citing Charles Blevins’s moonshine case and broader shifts in crime patterns.

The article argues that seven and a half miles of state highway near the city cost $70,000 and was built mostly by a Wyoming contractor and subcontractors. It claims Wyoming workers supplied equipment, labor, and facilities, with profits returning to Wyoming, and warns that a proposed law could allow outsiders to dominate road work and deprive Montana labor of millions.
