Big Timber hosts Hardin in a homecoming game at 2 pm on Friday. Both teams boast the district’s heaviest squads, with Hardin aiming to rebound after a loss to Harlowton and a recent win over Columbus, while Big Timber seeks its first home win after a 6-0 setback to Columbus and a prior loss to Wheatland.
About fifty women gathered in the library basement last Friday to form a Community Hospital Guild. Officiers elected include Mrs. Ernest Nelson as president and Mrs. Leif Anderson as vice president, with committees formed to support hospital outreach and projects for the new facility.
Royal Neighbors initiated three members at the Wednesday gathering with Or acle Stephens presiding. A white elephant bingo party for members is planned for Oct 18 and lunch was served by Agnes Refsland Mae Kjarmo and Mary Wagner. A district three VFW meeting will be held in Big Timber with registration at 1 pm at the Legion hall and a banquet to follow with Louis C Kalberg department commander as principal speaker.
Funeral services for 70 year old Mrs. Effie Robinson were conducted at the United Brethren Evangelical church with Rev. F. E. Wines and assisting pastors. Music aided by local musicians accompanied the service. Burial followed at Mountain View. Mrs. Robinson is survived by her husband, three children, six grandchildren, two brothers, and two sisters.
The Melville community held a 7:30 dinner at Allman hall for Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Nicholson and family. They sold the Melville store to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Rae of Absarokee who took over the first of the month and plan to visit Mrs. Nicholson’s son in British Columbia. The Nicholsons have moved to town and leased the Embry house on First Avenue.
Mrs. Bill Randall suffered a fractured knee and multiple cuts Sunday afternoon when the car carrying her and her husband collided with a westbound vehicle driven by Jess Scyphers seven miles east of town near Rock ranch on highway 10. Scyphers faced reckless driving charges, pleaded guilty, had license revoked for one year, and was fined $25. both couples received hospital treatment.
Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Vose travel to Omaha accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Johnson and Mrs. Leo Cremer. They will meet Leo Cremer who has just completed a rodeo there, and he will fly back with them Monday.
C F Ullman, a local building materials dealer, says shortages will fade in weeks and enough supplies will meet demand through the year. He notes freight car limits and high national activity have driven up cement, sheetrock and boards, but production is rising to catch up. He also mentions possible credit restrictions may cut housing starts by about a third, yet as many as 800000 homes could still be built depending on defense needs and financing.
Dick Bailey, renowned Great Falls organist, will present a free Hammond organ recital at the Lutheran parish hall on Friday evening October 6 at 8 o clock.
Local artist E L Frang is known for landscape paintings he pursued as a hobby since boyhood in Whitehall Wisconsin. His works, many housed in public buildings and private homes, earned blue ribbons at state fairs in Billings Helena Great Falls and at Montana State College Bozeman. He sold or gifted about 70 paintings and kept about 35, painting mainly on canvas and masonite during wartime. Frang advises young artists to draw constantly using any subject and to pursue art with simple dedication.
Phyllis Barrett, area counsellor for the blind, visits Billings to study how blind or partially blind people can work in the cleaning industry and learn machine shop. She demonstrates skills and teaches students at Rocky Mountain College as part of Hire the Physically Handicapped week and Montana’s public welfare program.
Effective October 16 the Pioneer raises yearly subscriptions from 2.50 to 3.00. Six months 1.75, three months 1.00. Single copies ten cents. Foreign country yearly 4.58 or three cents extra per week for ten pages. Rates unchanged six years, aligns with state weeklies, though outside-Montana mailing costs rise.
Sixteen Sweet Grass county 4 H and FFA members showed 108 calves lambs and hogs at the Butte livestock sale September 21 22 23 and 24 with several animals earning blue red and white ribbons. Purchasers from the county paid premiums above market price and local businesses supported the event with donations and prizes.
Rev. W. W. Steele of Couer d Alene Idaho will speak at the EUB church anniversary mission from Oct 10 to Oct 22 evenings at 8 and Sundays at 11. He will present 13 studies in Ephesians under the theme Our Inheritance in Christ alongside 7 morning Bible studies across two weeks. Everyone is welcome.
David Johnson John Nicholson Merle Bainter and Donald Duncan attended pre induction physicals in Butte on Sunday per draft board secretary Margaret Coster. Upcoming exams include Loren Pudwill Arthur Holland John Cudney Victor Surdal Patrick Cremer Henry Valgamore and Albert sees a Dickinson transfer. Next grate scare meeting set for Monday October 16.
George B. Conwell 74 died at his home east of Big Timber after a long illness. A Missouri native who had ranching ties in the area, his funeral is set at 1 30 this afternoon at Lowry chapel with Rev. F Vines of the Evangelical United Brethren church officiating. Burial is planned in Mountain View next week.
The high school magazine subscription drive reports $1267.35 in two days, 55 percent of the $2280 goal. Sophomores lead with $493.65, followed by seniors, freshmen, and juniors. Audrey Stephens tops sellers at $67.47 with a $5 prize. Dorothy McArthur close behind. Prizes include radio, wristwatch, Schaffer set, and cash or club entries. Proceeds fund skate purchases and other school expenses, with a buck deer contest for extra prizes.
