Favorite brands of food found to be adulterated
The Bozeman experiment station distributes Prof F W Traphagen bulletin alleging many brands of baking powder cat soup jams jellies canned fruits vegetables and more contain preservatives and colorings. Tomato ketchup in Montana found all impure and other canned goods show mixed results with several brands pure or adulterated. The report cites formaldehyde salicylic acid benzoic acid and coal tar dyes among additives and urges a pure food law as a remedy for indigestion blamed on these substances.

County Commissioners in Special Session at Big Timber
The Big Timber Montana board met in special session to open bids for the Big Timber to Melville road grading and for a bridge across Sweet Grass Creek at the Geo. W. Cook crossing. Bid details cited 325.00 and 35c yd for excavation, 81.40 yd for rock work. Action on the bridge and road postponed. D. J. Walvoord named to inspect the Stillwater River bridge and approve plans. The clerk to issue a road fund warrant for half the bridge contract. The Sign of the Cross by Wilson Barrett to be staged October 8 at the Auditorium with renowned scenery and costumes.

City of Concord Sinks in Lake Erie Storm
The old wooden steamer City of Concord with three barges in tow sank off Huron, Lake Erie, after a Saturday night storm. Three crewmen drowned: Frank Peters, John Wiser, and Roy Wakefield. Nine survivors reached Cedar Point after a perilous five hour struggle in a yaw boat and walked to Huron seven hours later. Captain Charles Meckheran, of Buffalo, had pressed seaward despite high winds. Some barges may have also gone down.

Five Killed as Train Collides With Switch Engine at New Prague
Minneapolis and St. Louis passenger No. 2 struck a switch engine in New Prague at 11:20 am after a late arrival and high speed. Five men died and over twenty five were seriously injured. four of the deaths occurred in the smoker as baggage and mail coaches telescoped into it. The victims included BE. D. de Marts, Frank Brown, Frank Wrabeck, George E. Klinkerfues, and Arthur Kilmer. Engineer W. C. Prescott and Fireman Adams escaped injury.
