A pre trial hearing on the Slough Creek road dispute between Sweet Grass and Park Counties and Feest Service was held before U S magistrate G Todd Baugh in Billings November 16 17 and 18 to allow evidence. The trial scheduled for November 25 was indefinitely postponed as counties seek written findings.
Nine accidents were reported to the Sheriff over the weekend amid heavy snow. A fatal crash occurred Friday near milepost 361 west of Big Timber when Laura Mae Jones of Hardin and Spokane died after her Pontiac collided with a Lewistown school bus carrying thirty five students. Bus riders were treated at Livingston hospital for minor injuries. Additional incidents included two car minor wrecks on West 2nd Ave, a tipped pickup and camper near town, and crashes near Oie Motors on Highway 10. Saturday saw a diesel-pump strike by a semi at Oie Motors and two semis wrecked on the Boulder Bridge with Bilings wrecker help. A report of an intersection crash near the Economy Store proved unfounded. More minor mishaps continued Monday and Tuesday as roads remained treacherous.
Thirty seven high school choir members traveled to Kalispell for the Shotwell Memorial Choir Festival at Flathead High School. The local choir performed two Jean Berger pieces under clinician Joe Lyles of Kenosha Wisconsin, a SPEBQSA rep, before a mass choir of 300 plus voices. The group logged five hours of work and gave a public concert Saturday night. Director Jon Quam called the trip an honor and praised the festival and students for a highly successful effort.
Local response centers on Health, Education and Welfare guidelines that could close Sweet Grass County’s hospital by 1979. A Washington aide to Rep. Max Baucus, Kayle Jackson, says the Dec 17 final comment deadline was secured after congressional pressure and residents are urged to write HEW protesting the proposals.
The Overland Recreation Association Board met with County Commissioners on November 2 and 16 to discuss options for paying outstanding accounts and financing golf course equipment. Voters blocked a county loan in the Oct 26 special election. Debts include 49766.77 in warrants and 17354.72 past due, plus a 6000 construction loan and 2500 to a local bank. Alternatives include private borrowing and bonds to avoid a mill levy.
Six winners named Betty Nygaard Joann Flare Dorothy Hooper Evva Sandre Mary Blumhagen and David Hathaway will collect certificates redeemable for Thanksgiving turkeys. The Pioneer notes the drawing was sponsored by more than 60 Big Timber businesses with coupons and deposit boxes available last week. The exact number of coupons deposited could not be estimated.
