Beet Sugar Prospects in Montana Promise Large Scale Planting

Dr. Frank W. Traphagen of Bozeman argues Montana can meet state sugar needs and export to other states. He envisions a 500 ton per day Hamilton beet sugar plant with future mills across the state, noting favorable soils in Hamilton, Missoula, Gallatin valley, Kalispell, Billings, Miles City, Livingston, Plains and perhaps Milk River valley. He cites high sugar percentages in 1898 tests, potential 200-250 local jobs per plant, plus 1,000 related positions, and a spillover profit for farmers through beet pulp feed and crop rotation.
