Sheriff warns that a nationwide wave of bad checks will surge during holidays. FBI data show 33,516 fraudulent checks worth 5.42 million dollars in 1960, with many losses unreported. Merchants urged to heighten identification and pursue restitution to deter crime.
Principal A R Collins lists the first quarter A and B honor rolls. A students include Andrea Rostad and Mary McDonnell with top averages, while B students feature Harold Kjarmo Sissel Orestad Linda Raisland and others with grades from 9.50 to 8.00.
Mr and Mrs George Riter and Mr and Mrs Elmer Nogelmeier with son Donald spent the weekend with the Montieiters in Miles City. They traveled from Watertown South Carolina to buy feeder cattle and visit their Big Timber kin.
The annual Boy Scout drive begins Tuesday with a 7 a m breakfast at Frye's cafe. Lions club members Robert L. Simmons and Marvin Barber will lead the event and urge county residents to support scouting for youths. Contributions may be left with J M Schneider at Citizens Bank or with Simmons or Barber.
The Herder B basketball squad of six sophomores and seven freshmen will play 20 games this season. They open with a Thanksgiving tournament in Ryegate against the Billings Colts Harlowton B and Ryegate, then host Red Lodge reserves on December 3.
Fifty shooters joined the first annual Jaycee trap shoot at the Big Timber outdoor range. Cort Strobel won two turkeys, taking first relay 14 of 15 and overall high honors. John Orser, Pat Pederson, and Bill Cole also won relays, with Mrs. Roger Whidden the sole woman entrant. The Jaycees plan additional shoots in spring and next fall. turkey winners can pick birds at Nicholson Market.
Mrs. Nancy Clayton underwent surgery at the Deaconess hospital in Billings Monday. A surprise farewell party for Elana Nyre was held Friday at Robert Davis home with hostesses Susan Davis Diane Weedin and Teresa Barber. Elana received gifts and the youngsters played games. Attendees included Nancy Lindley Cindy Cook Jeff Cook Kelly Davis Tracy Davis and Linda Beck.
Two special deer seasons have been opened in Sweet Grass County by the Montana fish and game department. Boundaries are defined in two legal notices in this week's Pioneer newspaper.
A candlelit ceremony Saturday November 12 at 4 pm joined Miss Lorraine Jones of Big Timber and Clement Breeding of Reed Point in the Evangelical United Brethren church. The couple's families and out of town guests attended a church reception afterward.
The Crazy Mountain Art club meets Monday November 21 at 8 p m at Mrs Arne Petaja’s home. The lesson covers composition as expression and storytelling in art with examples by Degas Poussin Sassetta Bruegel. Members should bring studied lesson books. all art enthusiasts are welcome.
Mrs Fannie Fogler and her daughter Mrs Virgil Broughton travel to Albuquerque New Mexico for the 25th class reunion of 1935. Fogler holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of New Mexico. The program includes a cocktail dinner at the Kirtland Air Force Base Officers Club parade dancing and visits to new buildings and a 30000 seat football stadium.
Seven people suffered injuries when a midnight collision on the Boulder road involved a car driven by Stephen Jarrett and another driven by Bud Widdicombe of Billings. The Jarrett car struck the Widdicombe vehicle en route to the Joe Widdicombe ranch. Injured: Linda Esp, Jane Ann Beck, Tom Larson, Stephen Jarrett, Bud Widdicombe, Wick Widdicombe, and Jim Widdicombe.
SGHS announces the 1960 61 Herder basketball schedule and tryouts. Varsity includes four seniors Ray Hoem Carl Ronneberg Robert Steensland Chuck Petaja. six juniors Marvin Stephens Dick Christ Joe Beley Walt Huyser Harry Berg Alex Adams. two sophomores Rick Clark John Paulson. The team plans a double post pattern with fast breaks and strong defense.
The district court jury term opens with the case M. W. Pederson versus Wm. L. Thomas on a debt collection. Paulson represents the plaintiff and E. O. Overland the defendant. Jurors drawn include Mrs. Joe Mathes John G. Johnson Thorvald Simonsen Earl H. Maher Ted Hetland Geraldine Henton Wm. H. Sargent Chloe Moffett Harold Hammersmark Orville Wulff and others.
Ballots for the agricultural stabilization and conservation county committee elections for 1961 will be mailed November 21 to all eligible voters in Sweet Grass county. Voters choose five of thirteen nominees for three seats with two alternates. Ballots must be postmarked or delivered by December 5.
Clyde Sullivan, former Boulderite now ranching near Livingston, expands this year to include 18 bred heifers 27 open heifers and 14 cows in the Miles City sale on November 18. Colorado Baldwin, a top herd bull, leads the lineup at the Miles City Sales Yards starting 12:30 p.m. with auctioneers Willard and Bob Schnell.
The Harmony Demonstration club met at Mrs. Severine Strand’s home on November 9 with ten members and one guest. Officers elected were F B Peterson president, Harry Shipton vice president, Irene Pollman secretary treasurer, Ellen Plaggemeyer parliamentarian, Henry Berg reporter. The group planned a Christmas dinner menu and a gift exchange, and held a mock wedding for member Mrs. Orville Noe. Next meeting set for Mrs. Mary Westre’s home.
The Citizens Bank and Trust Co directors again donate 100 to the national 4H Club Foundation as part of a nationwide effort. Last year over 2 100 banks contributed to 4H through this program. The national 4H Center will offer annual opportunities for 3 000 4H members to participate in citizenship courses in Washington.
The Sweet Grass County Wool Growers Association at its annual meeting denounces U.S. tariff and import quota policies affecting sheep and wool, urges alignment with organized labor, and warns that forest service permit actions and interstate highway gates threaten rural tax bases. Delegates and officers are named, with notes on recent talks by Montana State College officials and reports from Laramie.
The Harlem Clowns bring a comedy basketball show to Big Timber High School gym on Monday November 28 at 8 pm. Tickets cost 125 for adults and 75 cents for children with proceeds funding a new movie camera for the high school athletic department.

Russ Ewan will receive a letter for manager.
John Heurion announced the sale of Uptown Motel and Phillips 66 station to Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Wilson of Shepherd. The Heuri ons ran the business for 14 years with their son John D Heurion. They plan to visit Shelby and Great Falls with their sons and families before moving back to Montana to make a future home.
