Montana high school speech and drama students from Big Timber and Sweet Grass County placed just shy of the trophy at a Lewistown meet. Details appear on page 3. Also promotions and sports notes across town include turkey giveaway by 60 merchants, Scout canisters, and a conference tourney in Belgrade.
Tragedy struck Sweet Grass County as two residents died in separate weekends incidents. Four year old Benjamin Neal Andersen was fatally shot at the Clarence Rostad ranch near Big Timber. authorities say the rifle was not loaded and no criminal intent or inquest will occur. Katherine M. Douglas, 72, died after a Bozeman street collision with a truck, with Gertrude Conwell and Ella Adam injured. Douglas had taught in Big Timber and funeral services are set for Wednesday at the Congregational Church.
Six winners over 18 will be drawn next Tuesday in Big Timber for Thanksgiving turkeys. Coupons distributed today at participating stores may be deposited in boxes displayed around town and can be signed up for any day next week. Winners will be notified by phone after the Pioneer Nov 23 notice.
Big Timber Herders junior varsity girls completed a perfect 16 0 season with a 38 25 win over Engineers reserves in Harlowton. Freshman Kari Bergquist and Lesa Nitcy led scoring with 12 and 10 points as McCann Pedula Powell and Olson added key totals. The team outrebounded opponents 33 17 and built a late fourth quarter surge to seal the victory.
Montana Hospital Association accuses the National Guidelines for Health Planning of threatening small rural hospitals. The group warns mandatory application could shutter 19 state facilities including Big Timber Forsyth Hardin and Livingston and trigger doctor shortages and economic losses. Members urge the public to oppose the guidelines and send letters to federal and state representatives.
The 1977 78 Herder boys basketball team will scrimmage at 10 a m this Saturday November 19 in the high school gym. Seventeen players split into two teams for a game type scrimmage. The public may attend free. Fort Benton Invitational details to follow next week. opener against Deer Lodge includes both A and B squads.
The Jaycees challenge the Loyal Order of the Moose to donate the largest percentage of members as a unit in the Red Cross blood drive. The Moose lodge accepts per Dave Hodges. Losers donate twenty dollars to the winners charity. Blood drawing is on November 17 with a county quota of 5 units.
A Red Cross Bloodmobile visit is set for Thursday November 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the American Legion Hall. Local volunteers include American Legion Auxiliary and Tana Keller. Donor ages 17 to 65 weighing at least 110 pounds may donate with parental consent for 17 and 18 year olds. Donors will receive new plastic donor ID cards by mail listing name address blood type and more.
The Big Timber Grade School board met last Thursday evening to review the policy manual and plan to obtain copies of other manuals as a guideline. They discussed possible federal aid to repair the roof, completion of installed ramps, and approval to buy cameras for a school project involving several classes. Principal Ed Argenbright reported on parent teacher conferences, school pictures, Reading Series Workshop, and the screening vision program. All members attended except Linda Johnson. The next meeting is set for December 15 at the Grade School gym.
The Big Timber Ministerial Association sponsors the 7 church Thanksgiving Eve service at St. Josephs Catholic Church on November 23 at 7 30 p m. Fr Robert Shelley will preach and music comes from the High School Ensemble with Mrs John Boe as organist. The 1976 service was praised as highly successful by Association spokesmen.
