A narrator recalls a long winter marked by heavy snow and icy conditions in a Montana setting. He laments a design flaw: a house built on a slope with roof overhangs that funnel traffic onto an icy porch and dirt paths, causing frequent slips and near misses. The Hospital Guild sponsors a November food shower for Sweet Grass Community Hospital. Donations may be brought to the upcoming Guild meeting Monday November 18 at the library club rooms or left at the hospital anytime. Requested items include frozen or canned fruits and vegetables, jelly, jam, juices, chickens, turkeys, and meat. wild game is not needed. The Monday meeting at 2 30 PM will feature a program and refreshments.
Sweet Grass county will host an open free adult evening school sponsored by the high school board. Meetings begin January 8 and continue each Wednesday through March 12 with topics on range and soil management weed and insect control and income tax for ranchers.
The list names students earning A and B honor rolls. A students include Andrea Rostad John Drivdahl Sharon McKenzie Elizabeth Steensland, Vivian Larson, Carla Wulff and others with scores from 10.75 to 11.00. B students include Sue Ann Paulson Carol Rein Florence Yost Sharon Palm and more with scores from 9.00 to 8.00.
Helena long time resident and Belgrade bank official Lindsay Lewis 78 died at Fort Harrison Veterans Hospital after a hip fracture in January. Born Paris Kentucky in 1878 he worked in Louisville Kansas City and Montana banks before moving to Helena in 1919. He served as vice president and cashier of Belgrade State Bank and left a wife Ruth Knowles and a son Richard Lindsay Lewis Jr. Funeral services were held in Bozeman.
A televised program offers band selections including Burst of Trumpets Air and March March of the Little Leaden Soldier Theme From Picnic Fascination Round and Round. The program airs tonight with featured musical pieces and orchestra arrangements.
SGHS presents a week of performances featuring Purcell and Shakespeare repertoire including Macbeth and Witches Scene. Student groups perform choral ensembles, readings, a mixed chorus and spiritual arrangements to celebrate Education Week with audience attendance.
Governor Aronson announced the 1957 Christmas Seal Sale opens November 15 to fund tuberculosis programs in Montana. He cited high TB rates, nationwide costs and the association's year round work in case finding, education and rehabilitation. Mrs. Malcolm Goosey Sr. chairs the Sweet Grass county drive.
Montana's statewide ring-necked pheasant and Hungarian partridge season ends at sunset Sunday November 17. Reports from checking stations say hunters find slightly better pheasant hunting than in 1956. Three cock ring-necked pheasants may be taken, three Hungarian partridge west of the Continental Divide, and five east of the divide.
A nine voice Wings Over Jordan choir, touring the United States, will perform at the grade school gym Friday Nov 22 at 8 p m. The program features spiritual Negro music with no admission charge a free will offering will be taken.
At the Sweet Grass County Pioneer Society annual meeting a committee led by Ben Clark was formed to collect pioneer family histories. A membership drive will finance the project and by-law changes allow descendants to join. Officers were re-elected: Clara Liebel president, Nettie Nevin vice president, Ed Adam secretary treasurer.
Mrs Robert Clark was discharged Friday from St. Vincent hospital in Billings after a nine day stay for medical care.
The Big Timber Herders defeated Lodge Grass Indians 6-0 on a slippery Lodge Grass field to finish third in the Southern Division Class B conference. Bill Voges sparked a 75 yard interception return to set up the lone score, with Myers punching in from the center on the next play. The win capped a 6-3 season in conference play and 5-3 overall, as 14 seniors played their final high school game and received letters. The Herders allowed just 64 points across nine games while scoring 141, and Voges and John Green were named co-captains for 1957.
The Montana Farm Bureau Federation holds its 38th annual convention November 17 through 20 in Miles City at the Elks hall under George Diehl. E. M. Adams leads Sweet Grass county delegates with Elmer Arneson Clark Engle and Carl Thompson voting delegates. Mayor Herb Crone to welcome attendees. Jack Otten and Carl Smith oversee commodity conferences. Collected insights from William K. Alexander and other officials highlight progress for Montana Farm Bureau.
Ballots for the annual ASC county committeemen election will be mailed by November 22. Candidates nominated by the county election board include Lowell C. Gibson Lars Fotland and Robert Cosgriff. Nominating petitions due by November 15. Ballots reach all eligible voters but some may be missed. voters should visit the county office to confirm eligibility and vote before December 5.
Sweet Grass county 4 H club leaders held their annual dinner last Thursday at the Moose hall with about 57 leaders and spouses in attendance. Carl Idland served as master of ceremonies and introduced guests including Clive Haas Lions club representative Selmer Solberg John Plaggemeyer and John Yost of the county fair board Bill Fraser Jaycees Scott Hoskinson the Vong instructor Miss Louise Guild home demonstration agent F B Peterson county agent represented by Mrs Peterson and Mrs C C Collenborne secretary in the county agent's office. E O Overland entertained with talks and slides from a Europe trip, dinner served by the Women of the Moose.
Coach Ray Dodds starts the Sheepherders basketball program with a 10 man varsity including seniors Ken Boe Bill Voges Maier Miller Phil Moulden and others. JV begins Dec 2 with sophomores and freshmen. Open house Nov 26 features an intersquad game and rule changes. 22 game schedule opens Nov 29-30 at the Basketball Roundup with Stanford Belgrade Big Timber and Harlowton.
Mr and Mrs Tom Olson have moved back to the area from Livingston, resettling in the community.
Claude C. Gray led a group of 25 Big Timber residents and businesses to Helena to oppose a Montana Power rate increase. The petition argues rates should reflect true costs and not burden homes farms and small industries while noting Anaconda Copper Co. mine curtailments and the absence of access to company books.
The Sweet Grass County High School junior class will stage Jumpin Jupiter by Kurtz Gordon next Monday and Tuesday Nov 18 and 19 in the high school gym under Carol Rein, Lois James, Bob Crockett, and others. The cast includes Mervin Wertz directed and Carla Walff assisting with Shelley Van Cleve and others as stage managers. musical interludes are planned between acts.
Wareham police sought a gambler who entered Hidden House Cocktail lounge and pointed a gun at the bartender. He demanded all the money on the bar and claimed it was a joke for a $5 bet before vanishing into the night.
