STATE PRESIDENT Bernard Harkness toured Big Timber this past week as part of Farm Bureau coverage for Sweet Grass County. The visit is highlighted in page 4 with a photo and story. The issue also notes local notes and upcoming council meeting.
Voters defeated a proposed FMHA loan for Overland Golf Course two to one with 567 opposed and 278 in favor from 845 ballots. Precinct tallies showed 73 142 110 143 against and 0 0 for in four precincts. A fatal car crash near Hipawasy 295 claimed one SGCHS student and injured another. The coroner and county attorney discussed an inquest as officials awaited full investigation results. Services for David Dotson were held at the Big Timber Lutheran Church with interment in Bridger.
A special school bond election is set for next Tuesday November 8 at the high school gym. Polls open noon to 8 pm for registered county voters, with a single ballot showing Bonds Yes and Bonds No. Passage depends on turnout thresholds and a 40 percent turnout.
Absentee ballots for the special school bond issue election are available at the County Superintendent’s office until noon on Mon Nov 7. The office operates 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
Two nonfatal accidents were reported this week. A 74 Vega stolen from Lewistown was found with lights on and no occupants. two out-of-state suspects tied to the case and possible felony theft charges are anticipated. A second crash east of Overland Golf Course left Doug Esp with lacerations and a reckless driving charge.
New rules published in September went into effect yesterday. The landfill will open daily except Wednesdays and Sundays from 2 to 6 pm for trash drop offs. A minimum $1 charge applies to average pickup loads of burnable debris. larger or nonburnable loads require higher fees. Residential pickups have a 3 gallon size limit and 70 lb weight limit. Campaign workers started calls for contributions to six organizations on Nov 1. Pledges accepted, with options for equal or designated donations to American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Montana Heart Association, Boy and Girl Scouts of America, and Sweet Grass County Hospital Guild. Last year total donations reached 8606.75. the five-year high was 8953.56 in 1975. A brochure detailing services is available.
Forty teams from the Nile district competed in the Livestock Evaluation contest. Readable names include Mary Myers David Laubach Darla Sargent Mardi Halverson Terry Godfrey Dale Sargent Denise Holman and Edwina Schott. One team placed sixth and another twenty eighth in the thirty seven entries.
Mary placed eighth in the individual competition. Bill Sargent led the group. Judges covered breeding and market beef, sheep and swine, wool, horses and dairy cows. After judging, members attended a carcass evaluation session at PAYS.
