The seventeenth annual commence ment was held in the assembly room Monday night with Alfred Atkinson president of the state college at Bozeman as speaker. Readings and anthems filled the program as Rev Marsell urged safety first and a life guided by right thinking.
Reductions of twenty percent on selected commodities were approved by executives of major transcontinental lines to boost competition with water routes via the Panama Canal. The plan transfers western bound rates to Pacific coast terminals and defines eastbound applications to specific terminal points, with enforcement upon interstate approval.
In SHINCTON on May 24 the economy group opposed the 8495,900,000 naval mission bill as senators clashed over committee amendments. A 45 to 2 vote approved personnel increases to 120,000 with further amendments adding about AN. The state board of examiners named supervising architect George H. Carsley of Helena for the university projects at Bozeman and Missoula. Plans list costs and builders for Missoula Library and heating facilities, Bozeman engineering and shops, Missoula gymnasium, and other state institutions including Great Falls gymnasium and Butte metallurgical building, with total sums ranging from 50 000 to 250 000.
In Washington on May 24, the House failed to remove from the deficiency appropriation bill two Commerce Department items totaling 250000 for foreign aid development and 100000 for domestic industry assistance. Democrats led the opposition with irregular points, but procedural rulings overruled the motions.
Helena May 25 A campaign to compel every restaurant and cafe to remain sanitary is led by H M Shea head of the state health division after state inspections. W F Cogswell revoked the City cafe at Malta license on Shin suggestion and health officers were notified to act. More licenses will be revoked across the state unless immediate cleaning improves.
Samuel Untermeyer told the Lockwood legislative committee that Congress should amend federal laws to impose prison sentences on convicted members of building materials combinations. He urged state remedial legislation and cited alleged collusion between the Tile and Mantel Contractors Association of America and the International Union of Bricklayers, Masons and Plasterers.
The Senate approved unanimously Idaho Senator Borah’s naval disarmament conference proposal as an amendment to the naval appropriation bill. It authorizes inviting Great Britain and Japan to send representatives to a conference with U S officials to seek a plan.
The body of Peter Kelly, an Irish trapper born March 20, 1854, was found near Deer creek heading toward Lodgepole. Investigators note a bank deposit of 150 and 35 dollars in Currency, with papers indicating residence in Gallatin County for 30 years and recent travel from Elk Creek. The Cock boys alerted authorities after Kelly, aged about 65, traveled toward home on a stormy day.
The last will and testament of Col. A B Coit is filed for probate in the district court and not to be opened until June 11. Harvey Coit, eldest son, is petitioner and lists county assets including a 36000 note by H H Duncan with 5000 value and a $2000 Northwestern Mutual Life policy valued at 1022. He seeks administration without bond and Annette Coit aged 68 is named sole legatee. next of kin are Harvey of Big Timber Preston of Tucate Calif and Elizabeth Coit Williams of Youngstown Ohio.
Funeral services were held at the Congregational church for Mrs. George Smith. Rev. Marseil preached. music by a selected choir and organ. Hymns included Jesus Lover of My Soul Nearer My God to Thee and Jesus Savior Pilot Me. Interment was in Mountain View cemetery. Mrs. Mary Caroline Lyons born May 1 1853 in Washington county Missouri died May 22 197? in Big Timber aged 68. married George Smith in 1872. Her children were present for the last rites.
Jury sessions postponed as judge could not finish cases. several criminal matters heard with Altmark pleading guilty to two liquor charges and Wilson pleading guilty to a fine and jail time. Hiller, Jelmel, Perrine entered not guilty pleas and were released on bail.
Pro League Republicans led by Yale's Irving Fisher sent a cable to Lord Cecil protesting Ambassador Harvey's claim that Harding's election would decide against the United States joining the League of Nations. The group urged continued American support for the League and noted high-profile Republicans backing Harding as the sure path to entry.
