A $50 bill circulated through Sweet Grass County with rules to spend or pay bills and track community commerce. The experiment aims to measure how far cash moves as residents use it for services or purchases, returning to the Pioneer office for a new scroll. Bob Moulden received a school transportation award rather than athletic honors.
The third annual awards assembly at the gym Tuesday evening announced honors across activities. Florence Steensland received Annual award. Margaret Solland was editor. Basketball selections included captains R Reidelbach and players Bray Esp Mlekush, Lomeland, Hauge, Berg, Lamach manager. Football honors list co captains Ben Green Reidelbach along with Meyers Voges Nelson Moulden Hart Green Uhrich Olness Lomeland Hauge Berg Miekush Jones Jacobson Harper Gallentine Breeding Bray Bare Andrews O Dell manager O’Dell. Baseball captain Clarence Reidelbach led a roster featuring Hauge Green McCleerey Nelson Jacobson Berg Moulden Olness Voges. (Continued next week)
The parade will be held Sunday June 24 at 11 a m in conjunction with the Big Timber rodeo. Two prizes in each division will be awarded with details announced later Entries should be sent to Larry McComb parade committee chairman and state the division entered.
A 21 passenger Northwest flight diverted to Big Timber yesterday after engine trouble between here and Livingston. The pilot said the damaged engine could have allowed a return to Billings but opted to land. The craft, with 15 passengers plus crew, remains at the airport for about three days under guard by the National Guard while repairs are completed.
Franklin Alan Grosfield son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Grosfield has been named valedictorian and Emil Drivdahl is salutatorian of this year’s graduating class of Sweet Grass County High School announced by Principal A R Collins. Commencement is this evening at 8 o clock in the high school gym.

Col Huidekoper outlines Memorial Day meaning and calls citizens to honor fallen comrades with ceremonies, flag adorations, and graveside tributes. City parade starts 10 a.m. from Cort Hotel, proceeds to Mountain View cemetery and Yellowstone bridge, then Legion Memorial building for services.
District 1 plans a Monday May 20 commencement at 8:00 p.m. in the Grade ehon Auditorium. The program features a band, salutatory by Sheryl Gee, choral pieces, class history and prophecies, diplomas, and a procession of graduates led by Supt. A C McDonald and staff.
The Big Timber Jaycees won third place for their scrapbook on rural basketball instruction at the State Jaycee gathering in Helena last weekend. Don Cameron led delegates and wives J M Schneider, Bill Fraser, and Dick Fenton at the event. Robert E Johnson became Montana Junior Chamber president, with Kermit Kruse of Helena and J J Jensen of Bozeman named national directors.
Congressman Orvin B. Fiare arrives in Montana for a week of high school commencement speeches and political campaign meetings. Glendive hosts the fall visit as the Montana Stockgrowers board meets Billings, with Havre and Chinook venues for Jaycee events. Helena and Glasgow win Henry Giesenbier awards for outstanding Junior Chamber clubs. Bozeman and Dillon cited for outstanding projects in membership extension.
The notes list talks at Froid on May 22 and others through May 25 in Wolf Point Poplar and Scobey with tentative visits to Bainville Culbertson Vida and Flaxville. Flare to be adopted into the Sioux tribe at a May 24 Fort Peck ceremony before leaving Montana for Washington on May 26.
Thomas Busha 65 a retired lawyer and longtime Washington figure died yesterday at Mt. Alto Hospital. A Montana native and veteran he served in World War I and later led state and national American Legion roles. He also represented the Montana Chamber of Commerce in Washington and once presented Marshal Foch with a Montana bobcat.
The Ropin n Ridin club schedules a Play Day at the fair grounds on Sunday May 27. Participants should bring a horse for games including stake race saddle and go race barrel race and broom stick polo. A 1 pm potluck picnic starts the event with separate races for men women and children and a square dance later.
Col Wallis Huidekoper of Big Timber donated a 110 acre irrigated ranch in Sweet Grass county to the Endowment and Research Foundation at Montana State College for use by the veterinary research laboratory. He presented the gift at the Montana Stockgrowers Association annual meeting in Billings, where he serves as past honorary president.
Funeral services for Orlendo Smith were held Monday at 2 PM at Lowry Funeral Home. Smith died of a heart attack last Thursday while operating a tractor below Tin Can hill. Rev. Brentwood Barker officiated with music by Mrs. Robert Groom and Mrs. Mervin Sell at the organ. Pallbearers were Arvid Larson, Ole Solberg, Friday Alexander, August Mathes, Roy Moore and Eyestein Birkeland. Interment followed at Mountain View Cemetery. Survivors include two brothers, Gilbert and Les Brown, and several half-siblings. he had lived in Big Timber since 1938 after stints in Illinois.
Funeral services for Mrs. Milla Allen were held at Lowry Funeral Home with Rev. J. D. Lindley officiating. Born Milla Hudson in 1876, she died in Denver last week after edema and was interred in Mountain View after a March 3 service. Survivors include three daughters Elva Radcliff, Pearl Morton, Janana McNeese, and several grandchildren. husband George Allen died in 1948.
