Workers digging for soil for a city park uncover fifteen bodies at the hillside cemetery behind the Catholic church. The Lions Club bought the ground for 450, and remains will be moved to Mountain View Cemetery.
Organized labor led by William Green of the American Federation of Labor urged against the higher sugar duty in a letter read by Rep Ruth Baker Pratt in the House. Rep Frear criticized the sugar schedule as a vicious proposition harming workers and supporting low wages in western mills.
Los Angeles May 17 Alma Rubens motion picture actress was taken to the Southern California Hospital for the Insane after a confrontation at her home with her mother Theresa Rubens. Deputies were held off by Rubens who brandished a butcher knife before officers overpowered her and restrained her for admission.
Adam Troutman an early Rowkler valley miner and local figure died by suicide near the Gurrler ranch on Mendenhall Creek. His body was found the next day. Park county provided a small pension during his illness. Funeral services were held at Patterson chapel with interment at Memorial View. Born 1854 in Berks County, he mined across Colorado Wyoming and Montana before settling in 1882 with partner Winkler to operate mines on the Boulder. His brother John Troutman also died by suicide years earlier.
Carl E. Bade, 38, formerly of this city, was arrested in Wilmington California on a battery charge after allegedly attacking his estranged wife, Mrs. Saxton Bade, with a paring knife and razor at her home. She and another woman were treated for minor wounds. Bade, a former switchman and son of FL. C. Bade, had earlier moved the family from Butteyards to California after visiting New York.
Lord Rosebery statesman author and sportsman died at 2 42 a m in EPSOM England at age 81 or 82 after a long illness. Once prime minister 1884 96 he retired three years ago to focus on literature and racing where he won the derby thrice. His death follows the loss of a son in the World War.
Ben Wingard, 68, prominent Shawmut-area rancher, died in a hospital after a gasoline truck explosion Saturday afternoon near Shawmut. The blast was heard a mile and a half away. officials found him badly burned and the truck wrecked. No witnesses or clear cause for the explosion were reported.
John H. Lockwood age 33, a parachute jumper from Bitter Root now in Missoula, died after a fall in Portland Oregon. He survived by his parents and a brother and sister. He had performed parachute exhibitions in Missoula and once nearly died when a chute failed to open. Pilot Lon Brennan pinned the man to a wing tip during the fall. Lockwood's body was being brought to Missoula for burial and his mother traveled after learning of the accident.
Wyoming wools open higher than the start of the season with prices ranging from 2 to 5 cents above 1938 levels. Byron Wilson of the Wyoming Wool Growers Association reports better market prospects, noting lighter weight clips and stronger demand for choice wool. Highest price so far is 34.5 cents for a Rock Springs clip, with Raylwind district at 32.5 to 33.8 cents and Big Horn basin around 32 cents.
President Hoover announced Dwight F. Davis of St. Louis will become governor general of the Philippine islands succeeding Henry J. Stimson as secretary of state. Philippine delegates Roxas Osmena Guevara and Qostas welcomed the appointment as a sign of national prestige and proven ability in Philippine affairs.
In Spokane Washington a collision between a Northern Pacific gasoline coach and a freight train killed conductor Earl P. Cooper and injured a woman, Mrs Susan Miller, with skull fracture. Forty or more aboard received minor injuries as workers and passengers traveled from Idaho and Montana toward Paradise Montana.
Graduation exercises at the high school concluded eighth grade work for sixty pupils. The program featured invocations, music, speeches by Charles Henry and Wilfrid Sanderson, diplomas presented by Supt. Ullman, andClass Song. The Ravenlaureate service planned for Sunday ends the school year with support-card distribution May 29. The class of 1929, 31 graduates, will be honored May 28 with a large turnout and a banquet May 2 at Masonic Hall.
About 200 delegates closed the first biennial Montanas congress of parent teachers in Butte Mont May 18 after three days of sessions. Mrs W H Gilbert praised the reception and noted important studies and policies for schools. Helen Hardin urged a city wide play system to keep youths out of mischief as the Y M C A director spoke on playgrounds reducing juvenile delinquency.
State officials announced 3400 highway markers are delivered and marking will begin on three trunk routes. Numbers 10 12 and 87 will be first with branches toward Yellowstone Park and other regional tie ins. The plan aims to place regulation track time numbers on all main roads within two years.
Frank D. Hutchinson aged 32 a former Billings lumberman and longtime resident died after a car driven by Dr George A Clack overturned on the Yellowstone Trail two and a half miles northeast of Billings. Mrs Hutchinson and five others survived. Hutchinson leaves widow two children and a 28 year marriage anniversary due Monday.
