The Pioneer graduation issue highlights SGHS seniors with pictures on pages 4 and 5. Read page 3 for All About People and page 7 and 12 for SGHS Board actions including the Ski Club request. Ruth Beck retires from the Grade School this month and will remain in Big Timber. details of her plans and a party are on page 10.
The Big Timber Grade School Board tabled a decision on dropping tuition, fearing rural district closures. Citizens from Melville McLeod Grey Cliff and Bridge joined the meeting, with board members noting enrollment limits and potential funding needs if rural schools consolidate or lose tuition support.
City council unanimously passes a revised dog ordinance prohibiting dogs from running at large within Big Timber. It sets penalties from 25 to 100 dollars, outlines impoundment and notice procedures, and requires licenses and vaccinations for unlicensed pets. An animal control officer will be hired to enforce the rules.
Councilman Gary Propp and Mayor Oscar Stephens underscored licensing as a health measure to curb rabies. Dr. John Alexander noted more rabid wildlife approaching the area and urged pet vaccination as the sole way to prevent spread and protect residents.
The Sweet Grass County Rural Schools hold graduation at 8 p.m. at the high school gym with Spike Van Cleve addressing the class. Edith Harper presents awards, Telmar Terland confers diplomas, and graduates include Susan Clayton Shane Cosgriff Stewart Drange Lynda Eschenko Lynn Eschenko Dionne Hartung Douglas Kennedy Richard Mothershead Raymond VanderVoort and Patricia VanderVoort.
The Big Timber Grade School music department presents a free spring concert at 8 p.m. at the Grade School Gym on Tuesday May 24. The program features the 5th and 6th grade choir the 7th and 8th grade choir and the A and B Bands from 5th through 8th grades directed by John Novotny and Jon Quenn. No admission will be charged.
