How Lewistown Made Its Present Cognomen
Helena May 1 Lewistown Montana took its name from Camp Lewis which stood on the present business site, says Montana Historical Library librarian David Hilger. Records show Captain George L Browning and two companies camped there in 1875, with a later post office move and a petition by A Panewax signer. The name Lewistown honors Major William H Lewis of the Seventh Infantry, with corroborating notes from Forts Shaw Ellis and the Helena Herald of 1874.
