In Indianapolis on March 29 the United Mine Workers leaders returned to headquarters to supervise a national coal strike set to start Friday at midnight. Operators demand wage cuts while miners push for pay raises amid rising living costs, with work to halt March 31 when the current contract ends.
Wood, resident of Big Timber for eighteen years, died March 10 after several years of illness. Born April 9 in Jamestown New York, he moved with his parents to Clermont and later to Spearfish. He married Martha St. Cain and lived in Carlisle and Mon. Survived by Hallie Nellie Leese William Wood and Sam Wood. Funeral services held with Masonic lodge attendance.
United Mine Workers move to organize western Pennsylvania non-union miners ahead of April 1 strike. International rep Frank Hughes opened an office in Greensburg and distributed circulars signed by President John Lewis and other officials across Westmoreland County.
James Morgan secretary treasurer of District 22 United Mine Workers of America said no Wyoming operator workers conference is planned and it now appears the nationwide strike set for April 1 will begin. Mines will close the night of March 31 unless an extraordinary development occurs.
Governor Jos eph M. Dixon denounces Attorney General Rankin suggestion that he join the state’s Conley case as counsel. He says such duties belong to the attorney general, not the governor, and cites his ongoing prison investigation and heavy gubernatorial workload. The Conley suit seeks about $8300,000 with trial set before Judge Horsky on April 12.
Jake Schaefer won in the final block to claim the world balk line championship against Willie Hoppe in Chicago. Schaefer totaled 1 500 points to Hoppe's 1 468 after a nervy match with a December-like early lead and a close third block. Hoppe praised Schaefer as the best, and Schaefer planned to defend his title within 30 days against Welker Cochran, possibly in New York.
George L. Rickard known as Tex Rickard was found not guilty of criminal assault of Sarah Schoenfeld a 15 year old girl by a New York Supreme Court jury after about an hour and a half of deliberation. Rickard expressed joy embracing counsel and remarked this is the happiest day of my life. Three other indictments involving alleged offenses against other young girls remain pending.
Assad Juhray of Butte, condemned for the 1920 murder of Hugh Gibson, will serve a life term after the Montana Board of Pardons approved Governor Dixon's recommended commutation. A reprieve had delayed the sentence to March 24. Over 3,000 Butte residents petitioned for clemency. Juhray shot Gibson with his own revolver after pursuing Mrs. Gibson. a struggle ensued and Juhray was captured and convicted.
Peter O Fallang a pioneer of Melville and longtime eastern Montana resident died at his home Saturday after a long illness with dropsy. Funeral services were held Monday at the Lutheran church conducted by Rev. A A Holbeck. He was born May 18 1846 in Gran diocese Hadeland Norway and served in military school before emigrating to the United States. He settled in Melville after a varied early career in Norway Minnesota and Wisconsin. Interment was at Mountain View.
Montana officials voted to sell 16 state fair pari mutuel machines for 700 dollars but Attorney General Rankin urged reconsideration to seek a higher price. The board delayed final action to obtain Kentucky bids and discuss a possible statewide initiative to legalize pari mutuel betting next November.
Helena March 25 Representation of the wool growers of Montana the Montana Wool Growers association taxation committee will seek a hearing from the state board of equalization Monday to contest the boards valuation schedule for sheep set yesterday the committee members are Henry Sieben W J Bickett and Arthur Ward all of Helena the association adopted the committee report advocating the new values as the taxation base this year
Big Timber runs the first Montana music contest with many contestants arriving Wednesday. The event features a luncheon, receptions, and a full schedule through Friday night prize winners. Winners include Lewistown for piano and Bozeman for boys voice, with inns and chaperones listed among participants.
Washington March 28 The Senate Finance Committee plans to begin wrestling with the compromise soldiers bonus bill after handling the tariff measure. A conference with the president is likely before advancing the bill as members study how the Fordney proposal might serve as a solution.
In Trinidad Colorado the Sopris No 2 mine of Colorado Fuel and Iron exploded Friday. Rescue crews recovered 13 of 17 victims with four still unaccounted for as of 6 PM. Town residents faced a day of anxiety awaiting further developments.
Supreme Knight James Flaherty of the Knights of Columbus sent a congratulatory message to President Harding after his Washington Bible class statement denouncing religious intolerance. The message, approved by 900,000 Knights, praised the president for opposing prejudice as a menace to liberties.
The Montana state board of pardons approved Governor Dixon’s recommendation to commute sentences of three inmates at the state penitentiary for statutory offenses. One case involved Charles Faulkner, age 2, whose term for rape was reduced from 25 to 5 years to 6 to 380 years.
