Bill and Katie Fraser visited Washington last week for agriculture focused events. Katie testified before the House Agricultural Committee about farm problems, praised by Ray Finney of the American Cattle Growers Association. The Frasers noted broad industry collaboration and support from Montana lawmakers and other state groups.
The City Council approved a corrected Connerton subdivision plat after input from City County Planner Mike Sierz and Mary Connerton. They authorized underground cable work by Continental Telephone under conditions and discussed SGHS Board plans for an athletic field sprinkler system. Mayor Clark warned irrigation priorities may shift in drought and noted possible limits on park watering. The council approved mechanical backup alarms for city equipment and debated using the former Cort Hotel site as a parking lot, with no funds available for such a conversion. The meeting included all council members and two visitors.
The County Planning Board approved the amended Connerton plat on Monday night. Assessor Marvin Barber cited overlapping county city planning land tax issues and urged merger talks. The board delayed a policy statement on the Crazy Mountain Study while preparing April 4 recommendations.
Judge Thomas L. Judge announced no highway contracts for Big Timber to Grey Cliff before spring 1978 at earliest, pending funds. He noted 26 right of way parcels remain unsettled as of Feb 18, with at least three needing condemnation and several utility agreements unfinished.
A HSRI spokesman in Salt Lake said Dr Susann Steinberg will be available May 1 and eager to return to Sweet Grass County. Final confirmation depends on receiving her signed contract, with processing ongoing this week. An official announcement will follow once finalized.
Lions Park property damage like picnic tables and garbage cans spotted on 8th Ave prompt a sheriff warning. Criminal mischief may bring up to 500 dollars fine and up to six months in jail. Residents with information should contact the sheriff’s office.

Big Timber Independ ents face KOOK Globe Trippers from Billings with Randy Morrison and KOOK DJs, plus Eastern Montana College players. Half time show, local merchant gift certificates, chili pie feed by Otter Creek 4-H after. Admission 2.00 adults 1.00 students. Proceeds aid the McCauley fund.
The Big Timber Grade School Board reached a base salary of 9100 for first year teachers with a BA and added steps for experience and education, a 4.2 percent raise. They also chose to equalize coaching pay for men and women in similar duties and declined endorsement of the Read A Thon charity drive. The negotiating committee met with teachers to finalize the schedule, while discussions on grades and basketball participation continued.
