Women of Timber gather in Masonic Hall on March 1 1918 to adopt pledges enforcing wartime food rules and canvas households for conservation. Mrs Maggie Smith Hathaway representative from Ravalli and colleague Emma A Ingalls garnered respect in the Montana lower house for their actions both during a special session and in the previous regular session. William Jennings Bryan was denied a hearing at Massey Hall during a prohibition meeting under Dominion Alliance auspices. George W. Baker of Boulder reports the death of James Reed in San Diego on February 13 after a long illness. Reed, a Civil War veteran, arrived in 1879, joined the Yogo expedition, and later ranched on the Boulder before stints in Livingston and Portland. He was well known and regarded as an honest, generous neighbor.
A Livingston Elks delegation visited Big Timber for a one day drive to recruit new members. About 40 attended with entertainment including wrestling and boxing bouts, a large meal, and a musical finale. Applications for membership were received.
A Berlin dispatch reports a peace treaty between Russia and the four central powers agreeing to terminate the state of war and pursue peace. It outlines lines of demobilization, territory arrangements, and cooperative steps with Turkey and other states, plus provisions on evacuation and noninterference.
Anaconda High School defeated Big Timber by a wide margin in a fast paced exhibition at Daly Gym. McDonnell led Big Timber with 10 of 14 from the foul line while Ahern fueled Anaconda with five field baskets in the second half. Referee A Leahy received high praise for steady officiating.
The first monthly city council meeting was held Monday evening. City Attorney J. B. Selters submitted his resignation, citing heavy duties as county attorney, chair of the legal advisory board, and government appeal agent. He praised the mayor, council, and City Clerk Rees for their support.
A committee of prominent citizens compelled J. E. Keeton M. H. Hickey and An tone Mlekush to kneel on Main street and Callender yesterday at 3 PM to repeat allegiance to the United States and kiss the flag amid reactions to wartime sentiment. Montana state game and fish commission sets price at seventeen and one half cents per whitefish for consumers statewide under authority from a special session law. The action fixes the retail price to be charged in Montana stores and markets.
The United States food administration in Montana investigated a meatless day incident at the Elite hotel in Livingston after a waiter served a ham sandwich. Helena March 6 the state board of examiners authorized Montana War Bonds of 500000 dollars aimed to help farmers boost crops. Bonds issued in 900 denomination, six percent interest, five year term with a levy of one eighth mill to cover interest. Loans funded by bond proceeds repayable after fall harvest. Subscriptions start March 2 at the clerk of examiners office in Helena.
Seven cases, three criminal and four civil, are scheduled for March hearings from March 18 to 22. Cases include Gue Myrstol theft of sheep and A M Grosfield vs Northern Pacific Railway Co for stock damage. Jurors summoned for March 18 include six in U S service.
Washington reports the United States will launch the third Liberty loan on April six, marking the war’s first anniversary. The exact amount and terms await new legislation, but indication points to well over 3.6 billion dollars with an anticipated three to four week campaign.
During a heavy snowstorm a Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul freight train collided with a pile driver work train near Shawmut between Harlowton and Roundup at 2 o clock. Five men were killed including W W E Williams and C Gregon. Injured include E R Schofield Henry Shipley Glenn Mc Clung George Farrow.
