The eighth annual masquerade ball by the Big Timber Volunteer Fire Department drew about 700 attendees on Friday night February 23 in a full auditorium. Home made costumes and a long planning season marked the event, with the department noting strong community support and a 1917 record turnout.
Yellowstone National Park opens for the 1917 season on June 20 under new Interior Department rules. Automobiles carrying up to ten passengers will operate in the Wonderland, replacing horse drawn coaches. Tourists can complete the trip from Gardiner in five days with hotel or camp accommodations, and schedules allow nights in palatial hotels or permanent camps.

The city school P T A met Friday afternoon and approved programs on home education and children friendly moving pictures. A committee was named to discuss plans with management, and Mrs Henry Witten outlined summer tasks for the childrens home gardens. Fifty packets of aster seed were ordered for distribution to children.
The group discussed a plan for school banking and savings accounts with Mrs. Frank Lamp and Mrs. Nutting appointed to confer with city bankers. The afternoon covered the contemplated school building with architecture styles and model buildings. officers Pound Arneson and Nutting were named to meet trustees to formulate plans.
Governor Sam Stewart directs Attorney General S. C. Ford to challenge in court the legislature’s authority to form counties. The Fallon County split, creating Carter from the southern half, becomes the test case. Ford says legal action will start promptly.

Mrs. Robert Vestal died Tuesday night February 20. Funeral services were held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at St Mark's Episcopal Church, with burial at Mountain View cemetery. She was born March 26, 1864 in County Armagh Ireland and married Robert Vestal in 1897. Their daughter Louise survives. Mr. Vestal died in 1915.
Big Timber and Billings earned Yellowstone district spots in the state basketball tourney after three district wins in Laurel. Sugar Beet led by Busha McCarthy Barbour Lyon Haas Richards Lamp defeated Laurel and Red Lodge. locals beat Hardin Joliet Red Lodge to advance.
The final local season game features Townsend versus Sweet Grass in Bozeman state tournament context. Townsend earned earlier district final win to advance while Sweet Grass seeks to even their series from a prior hard fought victory. Admission rises to fifty and thirty five cents to cover season costs and equipment, with promises of a first class contest.
