Harry Reif of Bozeman was elected commander of the Montana American Legion by unanimous vote at the three day state convention in Helena. Livingston was chosen for the 1939 Legion and Auxiliary meetings. Four new department vice commanders were elected: George Gossman Dillon Ernest Yarbrough Hamilton President Boutelle Miles City and Frank Flaherty Great Falls. Mrs E W Popham Glendive was elected Auxiliary president. Mrs Popham succeeds Mrs Amy Hales Denhert Hardin who was named national committeewoman for Montana.

A seven day period ending last night produced sixty three violent deaths across Montana. Floods, train wrecks, an airplane crash, lightning and car accidents caused the toll with four more missing. The Milwaukee Olympian wreck near Miles City killed 44, a Havre flood killed nine, and other deaths occurred in a CCC train collision, air crash at Harlem, Chateau lightning death, dam drownings, a Glacier Park mountaineer death, and several auto crashes.

Quebec Hosts National Eucharistic Congress in Quebec City
June 26 report on Canada's first national eucharistic congress drawing about 300000 Catholics. One hundred thousand priests joined a three mile procession from Quebec Basilica to the Plains of Abraham with candles and chants. Cardinal Villeneuve celebrated benediction as the monstrance was displayed on the plains. Bells from over 50 churches rang to mark the event.

Lightning Kills Bank Cashier in Roberts Band Tragedy
In Roberts Carbon County on Tuesday night 32 year old bank cashier Oscar Pentilla was struck and killed by lightning while aiding band member Martin Patterson carry a bass drum. Patterson and Eugene Stein were knocked back about ten feet but escaped serious injuries as the trio headed to band practice. Pentilla held a metal music stand in one hand and the drum in the other when the bolt struck about 8 pm on main street.

President Roosevelt Welcomes Swedish Royal Guests
In Wilmington on June 27 President Roosevelt greeted Prince Bertil and Crown Prince Louise of Sweden at the 300th anniversary of the landing of Swedish colonists. He accepted a monument from the Swedish people and expressed regret that Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf could not come ashore due to illness. The royal party arrived aboard the Kungsholm for Swedish American festivities through July.
