New Teacher Meskimen Appointed at Sweet Grass High
Darrell Jack Meskimen was elected by the Sweet Grass county high school board to replace Steve Ollestad as teacher and guidance counselor. He arrives with wife Gwenn and two daughters, resides at the Hager apartment on Second Avenue East, and will assist Ed Holmberg in mathematics while leading the guidance department. He is a Western Montana College of Education graduate with four years teaching in Darby and enjoys fishing in spare time.

The Big Timber swimming pool is now operating with Sharon Palm and Roger Hauge as lifeguards. Hours run 10 am to noon except during lessons, and 1 to 5:30 pm. Closed Mondays. Adult swim may occur evenings if there is interest. Lesson registration set for June 30 and July 1. Participants should wear swimsuits and parents should print children’s names on towels and toys.

Former Resident Dies at Shepherd
Charles Ryan a former Sweet Grass County rancher died unexpectedly of a heart attack at his Shepherd ranch on Wednesday morning. Mrs. Robert J. McKenzie received word. Funeral services will be held in Big Timber, date not yet set.

Forest Fire on West Boulder Controlled
A lightning-caused blaze on West Boulder seven miles above Burnt Leather ranch was brought under control around 10 a.m. Tuesday. The Forest Service received the call at 11:25 a.m. Monday, with 55 men on site including locals and crews from Bozeman and Livingston. Ten smoke jumpers were dropped and a plane made 22 equipment drops. About 200 acres were affected, with 80 burned. Jumpers were withdrawn Tuesday as 18 more firefighters arrived from Bozeman for mop up.

State Horseshoe Contest Staged in Big Timber
Big Timber hosted the second annual AAU championship as 32 contestants from across Montana competed over weekend. Participants included players from Sweet Grass county. John Jacobs, Big Timber Jaycees president and sponsor, said qualification rounds were held Saturday for classification. The tournament proper began Saturday at 9 am with round robin games.

Pageant organizers in Big Timber report strong progress for the Miss Big Timber Pageant set for Saturday July 8 at the grade school gym. Eleven contestants compete for the title with winner advancing to Miss Montana in Billings July 29 and possible national finals in Atlantic City. Awards include a trophy inscribed bracelets for runners up and a traveling crown to be passed to future Miss Big Timber. Tickets are on sale at Rue's Radio TV.
