The Democrats split into the vindicators and purifiers, each nominating a slate of delegates and alternates to go to Kansas City. The vindicators chosen leaders include W. A. Clark and R. J. Fitzgerald of Great Falls with other delegates from Helena Butte Missoula and Custer, while alternates span Silver Bow Flathead Gallatin Lewis and Clarke Deer Lodge and Sweet Grass. The purifiers elected Dr. J. M. Fox W. M. Cockrill Martin Maginnis Walter S. Hartman R. B. Smith as delegates and Tom McTague W. A. Clark Virginia City A. J. King H. C. Stiff Edwin Norris David Marks as alternates.
Advices from Billings report that the Murphy Cattle company with 15000 head on the Crow reservation sold its brand to Hysham Bros of Red Oak Iowa and E B McPherson of the South Omaha National Bank. Price estimated at 30 to 35 dollars per head. Also reported is the sale of the Custer Cattle company brand to the same buyers. The Custer company runs 12000 to 15000 head. Paul McCormick of Billings and T C Power of Helena are its largest stockholders.
The state hosts a public examination in Helena on July 2 to select two West Point cadets with two alternates. Applicants aged 17 to 22 must be physically sound and proficient in reading writing arithmetic grammar geography and history. Dr. Wm. Treacy of Helena handles applications and cadets must report by July 25.
