Montana to expand wheat plantings from 1 785 204 acres on 30 000 farms to 2 561 644 acres in 2024 43 percent rise based on a state survey by E L Carrier federal farm help specialist. The study covers about 305 000 farms and notes gains in other crops and livestock across Montana with roughly 80 000 farms in the state.

Nine American ships were sunk by German U boats off the north Atlantic since May 26. The oldest victim was the Carolina of 8,000 tons, torpedoed near Sandy Hook. About 230 passengers and 130 crew abandoned ship. fate unknown but hope they were rescued. Other losses include the tanker Merbert L Pratt and the Winnie Connie plus six schooners.

Mrs. Mabel Potter wife of Dr. Peter Potter and Miss Adeline Hedges were killed when westbound train No 17 struck their roadster at a Milwaukee crossing. The car was moved about 120 feet and thrown clear of wreckage. The crossing view was unobstructed and the engineer said the car suddenly gained speed as it approached.
In Teereea Ill June 1 eleven men charged with the lynching of Robert Paul Prager enemy alien were acquitted by a jury after a forty five minute deliberation. Two ballots were taken and the defendants received a wild courtroom show of support from relatives and friends. The defense argued the wartime "unwritten law" used by the mob.
Governor Stewart announces the local board quota of 193 with a current 104. A five day draw begins the 24th to select 57 men for Camp Lewie and two for college training in Bozeman. Sweet Grass County lists about 350 men available as over 200 already serve.
Affidavits reveal Townley sought funds from Farmers Union members to support his Consumers United States company. W J Smith and J G Ingle present at a conference describe Townley saying farmers should be charged more and treated like cattle. Affidavits also allege a physical attack during the meeting and claim the company has collected nearly $1,000,000 from farmers with little return.
