In Big Timber a bear was seen Monday near the SGHS football field by Mrs. Deegan and Mrs. John Pollar. The animal, described as small, likely a yearling, fled toward the Boulevard area after crossing the hill.
In Billings visitors overheard talk of a state Joyce horseshoe tournament planned in Big Timber this summer. Dick Liquin opens Crest's Barber Shop shoe shine, aided by his mother’s daughter in law. The Flare girls Gail and Diane travel with Orvi to Great Falls, Butte, and Helena to learn campaigning from their father.
The YTke Pioneer shifts to a five day week from June 1 with printing on Thursday and Friday and exclusive newspaper work Monday to Wednesday. They plan to accommodate rush orders and may work weekends if needed but prefer orders before Thursday for same weekend completion.
Big Timber Jaycees will launch "Dial a Prayer" an automatic phone message in the Big Timber Telephone Co building. Dialing the number plays a daily prayer with local ministers offering personal prayers to aid religious welfare for shut ins hospital patients and those unable to attend services.
The census bureau reports declines in both county and city populations since the postwar boom. County totals drop from 3,621 to 3,240, while Big Timber falls from 1,677 to 1,649. Montana’s statewide population stands at 666,550, with about four people per square mile.
Bill Fraser elected state vice president of Montana Jaycees at annual convention in Billings. Norman Starr received the distinguished service award and Jim Graham named outstanding chamber president of the year. Big Timber well represented at the Jaycees and Jayceens meeting.
Billings Republican Jim Battin, candidate for U S representative from Montana's second district, will discuss political issues at Frye's cafe today at 3 p m. He has visited Big Timber before with his sister Mrs Art Olsen and family. Everyone is invited to attend.
Albert J. Hanson was celebrated Sunday with a surprise potluck at his ranch north of Melville for his 80th birthday. Mrs. Hanson also noted to have a birthday June 25. A purse of silver was presented. Among attendees were Keith Harlan, Thor Hanson, Irene Pullman, Howard Hanson, Lars Larson, and many relatives from Great Falls Billings Douglas Bozeman and beyond.
Parade entries including floats must be mailed to Parade Chairman Tope Strobel by June 10. Tope reported funds coming in but additional contributions are needed. Checks may be mailed or given to Tope in person.
Delmar S. Coughlin son of Mrs Lucy Coughlin and Virginia Ellen Thompson daughter of Mrs James Roberts were united in marriage yesterday at St Marks Episcopal Church with Rev R R Price officiating. The couple will reside in Billings where he works at Freeman Shoe Store.
The list shows candidates for U S Senate, Congress, Governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, superintendent, state auditor, railroad and public service commissioner, associate justice, state senator and representative, county officials, and other offices. notables include LeRoy Anderson, Willard Fraser, Tim Babcock, Forrest H. Anderson, and Jack Toole among many party nominees in a comprehensive ballot preview.
The 1960 Montania Champion banquet of the Big Timber Rifle and Pistol club occurred at Frye's cafe with guests including Mr. and Mrs. Bob Reiser and others. Kenneth Elgen earned the Huidekoper trophy and a Montana Rifle Assn certificate as indoor gallery champion with a 1567 score, edging Lones Wigger who shot 1565. The club approved expanding junior shooting, noting 70 Sweet Grass County youths participated, and announced continued summer practice led by George Domasco.
In Germany, May marked birthdays of Mrs Helvik and Mrs Harvie Hanson, great aunt to Julian, observed together. Mrs Hanson reached 100 years. Ole Gausland visiting Norway lent his car for tours. Mrs Helvik also visited her step grandfather in Narbo, Norway.
County clerk Dick Armstrong says polls open Tuesday June 7 from 10 a m to 8 p m. There are 1614 registered voters. The tentative list includes Big Timber East Precinct 1 and 2, Grey Clif Rudolf Forster and Duane Braaten, McLeod 4 Robert Brownlee and John Cooper, Melville 5 Leif Anderson and George Crum among others.
Mrs Dick Budd longtime Big Timber druggist widow of local figure dies May 18 in Santa Monica California after a yearlong illness. Survived by daughter Mrs Troy Carmichael two sisters Mrs George Snyder Helena and Barbara Budd two grandsons John Budd Miles City and Willige Budd Seattle. Funeral in Santa Monica with interment at Lakeview Cemetery Seattle.
SGHS announces honor rolls for second semester with A grades from 4.00 down to 8.00 and B grades from 3.00 to 3.50. Top names include Gloria Boe, Andrea Rostad, Linda Clark, Dixie Warp, Joyce Woodhouse, Ray Lomeland, John Paulson, Forrest Ullman, plus Sheryl Gee and Bill McLauchlan among others.
Beautiful weather and strong turnout marked Memorial Day in Big Timber. Veterans, youth groups, and scouts joined a parade along McLeod Street ending at the Legion Memorial building for a service led by Rev. H. Fichtler and invocation by Rev. R. Price. Price chaired the Legion ceremony at the cemetery and Yellow Stone Bridge, where flowers were cast for those lost at sea. Commander Rudolph Mosness led as marshal. color guard included Nicholson, Schneider, Petaja, and Fiore. firing squad members were McCauley, Deegan, Manley, Mosness, Dutton, Nicholson, Shay, and Traver.
During June July and August the Congregational church will hold a 30 minute Vesper service each Friday at 8 pm. Helmuth Fichtler says the plan helps families on vacation or at the resort center attend worship together if they cannot attend Sunday services. Everyone in the community is invited to join these Friday evening services.

Mrs. Henry Elgen and Mrs. F. F. Crockett shared highlights from the national TOPS convention in Detroit May 1922. Miss Ruth Mann of Miami won the title after losing 154 pounds in under a year among 3000 registrants. next year’s event will be in Minneapolis. Mrs. Roland Woodhouse received the loving cup for most pounds lost. Mrs. Norman Hauge was named secretary, replacing Mrs. Donald Poliman.
Sixty nine entries received for the High School rodeo to be held in Big Timber this Saturday and Sunday. Of the 48 boys and 21 girls, events include saddle bronc bareback steer wrestling calf roping bull riding cow cutting and more. Local contestants listed and scholarships announced for senior students.
A committee of the Women of the Farm Bureau at Fryes cafe recommended spending 25 for more books for the Freedom Bookshelf at the Carnegie library. The projects include citizenship, a talent show, a poster contest, Food Comes First, and health identification cards. The Farm Bureau later adopted all recommendations. The committee members were Mrs. John Yost, Mrs. Burton Robinson, Mrs. Lee Smoot, Mrs. R. H. Eurich, Mrs. Sigurd Lavold, Mrs. Lowell Gibson, and Mrs. Howard Hanson.
Wesley A. D Ewart Republican candidate and former U S Representative and assistant secretary of agriculture visited Big Timber yesterday during a statewide campaign swing. He spoke in Livingston Tuesday night with Senate candidate Fred Martin and urged support as he reenters politics noting Montana's vast campaign terrain.
Mrs. MacLean Clark was installed as worthy matron and Dan Laubach as worthy patron at a Sweet Grass chapter No. 22 CBS meeting. About 50 members attended. presiding matron was Mrs. Wilbert Johnson.
In Justice, Donald Hauge pleaded not guilty through attorney E.O. Overland to a charge of malicious destruction of property involving an embankment on Jim Creek owned by Howard Hanson. Bond $25 posted. trial set for June 3 at 10 a.m. Ronald Tousley forfeited $25 bond on the same charge after a fight at Eaton's Inn resulted in bruises and an ambulance transfer to Community Hospital.
