A letter discusses the rapid spread of leafy spurge along the Boulder river drainage, especially on irrigation banks and river bars. It urges forming weed districts to coordinate control across the drainage, cites available chemicals, and notes local infestations near Melville and highway 19.
The Miss Big Timber Pageant receives congratulations for its first annual event. Lions members are thanked for their work, especially Mac Clark for his hours on the Pageant booklet from development to production.
Mrs Sylvester Lavold departed Friday for Venice California to spend time with her daughter Mrs Ed Nelson and family.
Ted C Busha died from a chest wound Friday at Community Hospital after a Wednesday shooting. Funeral services were at Big Timber Lutheran Church with Army Legion honors at Mountain View. Survived by wife Margaret Crest, son David, four sisters and four grandchildren. He served as Big Timber chief of police and city clerk.
The Sweet Grass County Farm Bureau will sponsor a Talk Meet contest for Farm Bureau member youth ages 17 to 30. Participants give a five minute talk on Farming in the 60s Freedom or Bondage. County and state winners receive transportation to broader Farm Bureau events in Chicago.
The 43rd Montana American Legion department convention will run July 14 to 16 in Bozeman with hundreds of Legionnaires and Auxiliary members. National Commander William R. Burke and National Auxiliary President Mrs Henry Ahnmiller will speak at the joint banquet July 15. Attendance includes promenade July 13, daylong sessions, child welfare luncheon, memorial services, and a parade and banquet at Montana State College.
The Big Timber Jaycees sponsor a trapshoot at the fair grounds Sunday starting at noon. Open to all, the event uses official rules with Straight line and bacon events. Hand loaded shells cost 1.50 per box, new shells also available. refreshments served.
The Lions club installed new officers at a Tuesday noon meeting. Special guests included Miss Big Timber Pageant winners Sissel Orestad Carol Rein and Sharon Palm. New officers are Harold McLauchlan president Dr Vernon Standish and Russell Smith vice presidents O J Paulson secretary C F Ullman treasurer Walt Huffman tail twister Don Haas lion tamer and Dorman Kellogg Harold Rue directors for three-year terms.
Mr and Mrs Roy Woeppel with four children visit with her parents Mr and Mrs Dan Lau bach for a week then plan to travel north before moving to Bonnyville Alberta Canada where Mr Woeppel will teach next year. Summer visitors Mr and Mrs Louis Grosfield and children from Santa Barbara Calif arrive to spend the summer at their ranch here.
Ranger Don Niven reported no man caused fires in the district this summer with two lightning fires this week. A potential blaze on West Bridger was extinguished and a spot fire on Green mountain near Main Boulder. The fire index is down but may rise to critical if temperatures warm, and no fires have occurred in the Crazies this year.
Mrs. C. C. Collenborne received a letter from Capt. John O. Bovard praising Kenneth Collenborne. The communications chief and radio repairman impressed with self direction and results during Operation Wintershield AGI and CMI. Kenneth serves with a tank battalion in Germany. Also, Mrs. Lucy Kirk of Harlowton visited friends in town.
Farmers in Sweet Grass County hit by grain and livestock losses may apply at the Farmers Home Administration in Bozeman for emergency credit. Loans cover feed seed fertilizer replacement livestock and equipment with 3 percent interest and repayment tied to crop sales or livestock product sales.
President Kennedy signed amendments boosting benefits for 62 plus. Men may retire at 62 with reduced or at 65 with higher payments. Widows and dependents gain, minimums rise to 40, and work credits loosen. Taxes rise January 1 1962 to fund the changes.
Sissel Oiestad was crowned Miss Big Timber for 1961 at the Miss Big Timber Pageant Saturday night. Carol Rein was first runner up and Sharon Palm second runner up. The Lions club sponsor said the affair exceeded fondest hopes with fine entertainment and near capacity attendance at the grade school auditorium.
Ticket sales totaled 386 dollars, business contributions 317.50, booklet sales 101.75, totaling 805.25 with expenses about 349.55. Miss Oiestad won 100 dollars, Miss Rein and Miss Palm 25 each. Sissel will represent Big Timber at the state pageant in Billings on July 29. Ten contestants were escorted by four Army Reserve members, Delbert Sell, Vern Spurgin, Don Sheen and Roger Engle, all in full dress, as Norene Jacobs and Carol Rae Collins helped present trophies. Judges Ben Knopp, Vernon Standish, Harry Wordal, Jack Cooper and Victor Tronrud Jr. faced a tough task amid strong talent.

Georgia Domasco celebrated her eleventh birthday with a supper at her home last Wednesday evening. Present were Susan Davis Elana Nyre Teresa Barber and Linda Beck. The group played Bingo and other games. The supper was served by Mrs. Geo Domasco and Mrs. Margaret Campbell.
Edward Niles Adam died of a heart attack at Fort Harrison Veterans Hospital after cancer treatment. Funeral at St. Mark's Episcopal Church with interment at Mountain View conducted by the American Legion. Survivors include Ella Dailman, a sister in Winnett, and Emil W. Adam of Billings. He was a Stanford electrical engineering graduate and WWI veteran.
Mrs. William Muir returns home after five weeks at Billings where she kept house for her son Delmar while his wife and son visited Michigan. Mrs. Delmar Muir accompanied her mother back to Michigan and stayed for a visit there.
