Seven Perish in Montana Over Long Independence Day Weekend
Seven people died in Montana during the four day Independence Day period from 6 p.m. Wednesday to midnight Sunday. Traffic crashes accounted for three deaths, drowning for three, and a light airplane crash for one. The toll brought Montana's 1957 traffic deaths to 91, down from 129 a year earlier, with multiple separate incidents across Fallon, Helena, Havre, Shelby, Babb, and other locations. A bear chase in East Helena and a rescue effort near Lewistown are also noted along with a fatal crash near Colum bus and a construction accident in Butte. The article continues on page eight.

Death in Big Timber of Mrs. Bertina Skaarland
Mrs. Bertina Skaarland aged 89 died at her Big Timber home after a long illness. Funeral services will be at Lowry Chapel Friday at 2 PM with Elder A R Lodahl of the Latter Day Saints in Bozeman officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View. Born February 5 1968 in Vetteland Stavanger Norway she married Cornelius Skaarland who died April 2 1943. The couple moved to the United States in 1904 and children survived include five daughters and one son plus grandchildren and great grandchildren.

True fish story from Hammond woman ends in odd birth
In Hammond Indiana Mrs. Howard L. Rose claims a guppy in her aquarium gave birth to nine fry, then exited the tank and died. Using a paring knife tweezers and safety pins she delivered 21 more tiny guppies from the fish’s body in an extraordinary home procedure.

Funeral services for Mrs Margaret Berg age 69 were held at the First Congregational church with Rev. Harry C. Kuhnert officiating. She died at home after a stroke last September. Music featured performances by local singers and organ accompaniment. Pallbearers included Harry McComb Clyde Davis Harold Boe Roy Vaughn Hans Beley and Toby Osen. Born February 12 1888 on a ranch near Big Timber she lived in Sweet Grass County most of her life. She was daughter of John and Elizabeth Ellison early settlers from England. She married Arthur Berg September 5 1938 in Lewistown. Survivors include her husband two daughters Ina Kurzhall Havre and Helen Filicetti Ogden Utah two sons Ray West Livingston one brother Frederick Ellison McLeod and two sisters Florence Davis California and Alice Morris Big Timber.

City Pool Offers Structured Swim Lessons This Week
Life guard David Herries announces swim lessons at the city pool with sessions on Tuesday Thursday and Friday. Ages 6 to 9 meet 9 15 to 10 00, ages 9 to 12 from 10 15 to 11 00, and 12 and over plus advanced pupils from 11 15 to 12 00. Registration continues this week with a cut off after Sunday July 14. Lida Beghtol assists as instructor and is married to Floyd Beghtol of the Shell Oil crew. She is a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College and has summers of experience as an instructor. No under six allowed in pool area without a parent and only lesson participants may be in the pool during class.

C R Vose and five other occupants died when a Lockheed Constellation lost an engine shortly after takeoff at about 500 feet in Alaska. Mrs Vose Miss Polly Jo Evans of Augusta Georgia Mr and Mrs Freeley of Seattle the pilot and co pilot Ralph Hughes of Wisconsin were aboard the business trip from June 26 via Seattle. 1957 Conservation Payments Begin in Montana
