Melville hosted a full Fourth of July celebration with a large turnout from Big Timber and surrounding areas. James Vestal Funeral Attended by Many Friends
The funeral for James Vestal, who died of Brights disease at his Martinsdale ranch, was held at the Congregational church in Big Timber. Rev. Pope officiated as relatives and long-time neighbors mourned, with interment in Mountain View cemetery and pallbearers named from the Vestal circle. Vestal, a Montana pioneer born 1853, left Pleasant Hill Missouri, married Hattie Turman, later Belle Atridge, and lived at Martinsdale and Big Timber with four children present at the service.

Fire loss adjustment quick for Olson home
F A Henderson acted as independent fire adjuster Tuesday from Kutte to settle Theodore Olson’s home fire. Truman Lanphear N O Troyer were chosen to adjust the loss with Ole Lalverson and J J Gallagher handling plumbing. Damages set at 1927.46 to be paid by Firemen's Fund and Caledonian Insurance, represented by J A Lowry & Co. The fire occurred on the third of the month, making the adjustment unusually swift.

Miner Dies After Labor Dispute Case Verdict
The Western Federation of Miners faced a labor disturbance in which Lantern could not speak English when asked to plead. Judge Booker sent him to jail for 24 hours, then fined him $10 for attacking Altonen. Lantela died Sunday night.

Fire Butters Olson Home Fire Brings Night Brigade
Just before midnight Thursday the Olson home across the river caught fire. Volunteers used buckets and ladders as the hose wagon was impractical. Fire started in a coal pile in the cellar and burned through the floor. the flames were nearly out upon arrival. Insurance covers the loss.

Mayor Duncan fatally shoots Finlander in city hall
In Butte Finlander Erick Lantela attacked Mayor Duncan in the city hall and was shot after drawing a large knife. The mayor, who defended himself with a revolver, was stabbed three times while overpowered help arrived. The incident followed tensions over Alanen’s status in the city.

Right Fish Misattribution Sparks Trout Tale
A five trout catch from the Boulder weighed over 30 pounds in total. The Pioneer wrongly credited Elmer Sanderson for a five pounder won by John P. Campbell who later passed the fish to Mr. Sanderson to mail to Miles City relatives. Birmingham’s Stormy Political Career Ends in 1918
