Wets and Drys See Mixed Prospects On Prohibition's Fifth Anniversary

On the eve of the fifth anniversary of federal prohibition both sides issued statements. Wayne Wheeler of the Anti Saloon League hailed the day as a dawn of freedom and prosperity while W P Slayton of the Association Against the Prohibition Amendment warned of little rejoicing among dry advocates. Wheeler claimed liquor outlaws pay fines and penalties close to enforcement costs, and that beer saloons are largely a memory. Slayton argued drinking and bootlegging rise amid enforcement costs and cited a huge revenue loss and mounting arrests as evidence against prohibition.
