Serving Big Timber and Sweet Grass County Montana previews a regular Meet the Herders feature with insights from basketball players. The notice also highlights a March of Dimes Talent Show, a ski club start with a Bridger Bowl talk tomorrow, and a large legislative bill potentially reshaping city and county government.
The Apr. 5 local general election features two mayoral candidates Harold McLauchlan and Oscar Stephens and a city council leash law referred to voters. Rose Crockett seeks re election as Justice of the Peace. Four year council bids by Joe Hansen and Lois Bjorndal are unopposed. Donna Buechler seeks re election as City Treasurer. County posts open include two county commissioner seats and Clerk of Court. Dist 3 candidate Ray Esp Clark Fnele and Dist 1 candidate Engle seek six and two year terms respectively. A Feb 8 special primary will be county wide.
Futile County will hold a special primary on February 8 for three open county positions despite only three candidates. County officials say the election is required under current local government codes, though a pending bill could alter the rule. Open seats include two commissioner posts and the clerk of the district court. Current commissioners Kay Esp and Clark Englett filed for the first seat and for the clerk’s post remains contested.
Bjarne Bjorndal of Big Timber was elected head of the Sweet Grass County Commission at the annual reorganizational meeting for 1977. He will lead the board as Ray Esp and Clark Engle seek re election with Engle to complete Ed Sell's unexpired term.
County commissioners and Health Services Research Institute await final word on a second physician for Sweet Grass County. George Powell said a doctor is considering the area with at least one other offer. no interim appointment will be made, and Dr. Tom Ivey will maintain the current status until a permanent physician arrives.
Ellis Faw posts a $500 reward for the arrest of the thief and the return of 15 saddles stolen from his residence at the KOA campground on December 16. Informants should write a six digit code on both halves of paper and send tips to The Pioneer Big Timber MT.
The City Council met briefly to consider buying a 1958 1 1 bucket loader with revenue sharing funds. They voted to sell the smaller loader to offset costs and set Bob Mack’s monthly salary. The mayor sought permission to be out of state January 17.
A public meeting to discuss surface and underground water problems will be held at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the House chambers, Helena. Representative Orval Ellison notes the Select Committee on Water Problems will aid in drafting legislation and seeks input from Sweet Grass residents and others.
About thirty people attended the Courthouse public hearing on interim zoning between east and west I-90 interchanges in Big Timber. County planner Mike Sierz outlined goals and options while opponents argued over land rights and local control. the commission set a January 17 meeting to review input.
