A heated push by Harlowton Columbus and Stillwater factions threatens to split Sweet Grass county into two new units. Map proposals cut vast farm land and tax base, with potential losses in Northern Pacific land and state holdings. Community leaders vow to oppose division and fund mapmaking and Helena representation.
The Montana annual report by D. W. Raymond shows 243,662 cattle shipped out of state with 218,183 to eastern markets and 25,479 to western markets. Inspectors recovered 9,250 estrays, 1,858 paid to owners, and proceeds for 73 cattle drifted from Canada. The board also paid the Western Stockgrowers' association for 137 cattle. About 30,097 horses were shipped, with 108 estrays recovered.
In his annual report Prof. F B Linfield, director of the agricultural experiment station, says adding more substations now would be a grave mistake given population and funds. He notes western states oppose too many substations and describes the Judith Basin substation established four years ago in cooperation with the U S department of agriculture for supervision.
The Twelfth Assembly holds a record with at least fifteen county division measures awaiting introduction. Musselshell County is favored for formation while opponents from populous western counties warn of unequal senatorial representation and higher county costs. Law proposed to shift county seat selection to county commissioners, with ties broken by lottery if needed.
Montana will have strong representation at the Western Land Products exhibition in Omaha from Jan 18 to 28. Northern Pacific Great Northern and Burlington will display on one side of the auditorium with a grain mosaic trademark and electric lighting. The event aims to grow into an annual showcase and to draw visitors from the middle west as Montana plans to promote its products and possible law school efforts.
The University of Montana will gain the late Judge Dixon's law library through a gift from Mrs. William Wirt Dixon. The donation aims to support a proposed law school at the state university and to serve as a memorial to her husband. New students enroll for the second semester starting January 31.
Professor Thomas Shaw announced that the Great Northern Railway will expand agricultural experiment stations in Montana for nonirrigated land settlers. New stations will be at Hedges Malta Walier Carter Buffalo Shorey and Shelby Junction each about six acres, plus an eighty acre site at Poplar on the Indian reservation. Last year forty five farms were established and a large influx of settlers is anticipated next spring.
The Twelfth assembly conducted the initial ballot to choose a successor to Thos H Carter in the United States Senate. Carter led with pluralities in both chambers, while Walsh and Conrad trailed. scattering votes and absentees influenced the early tallies. The second day brought shifts as several members switched support and joint results showed Carter gaining ground.
The annual report shows the state holds 3,870,165 acres, with 2,449,134 acres under lease earning $2,733,172. Fergus county leads income with $1,211,687 and Fergus average sale price tops at $25.59 per acre. Total 1910 receipts were $826,836, with 15 percent cash payments.
A Washington telegram says Secretary Ballinger instructed the General Land Office to demand Northern Pacific deposit 64000 dollars to cover surveying costs for forty townships of railroad grant land in Montana. The act requires the company to pay its share of survey costs to complete unsurveyed western lands. The Montana lands are south central, just north of Yellowstone Park.
The National Wool Growers association meeting in Portland Oregon endorsed the current tariff schedules for wool and wool products. They oppose any reduction and urge protective duties equal to those for manufacturers. A report from President Tafts tariff board is requested before Congress acts.
