The Big Timber Rifle and Pistol Club fired 1559 to set a state record, defeating Bozeman Bobcats who posted 1553 in the annual Yellow stone Valley two day rifle match. Fifty shooters competed with detailed aggregates and class results led by Bud Pile and William Brown in the iron sight group.

Big Timber MEA unit to stage annual play for scholarship
The Big Timber Montana Education Association unit will present its fourth annual play on March 6 and 7 to fund a scholarship program. Two Sweet Grass county high school graduates receive seventy five dollars per year for two years in education, the largest MEA unit scholarship in the state. Current beneficiaries include Wilma Tuttle Elizabeth Steensland and Beverly Hanson. Six students have benefited to date. The farce Adam's Evening features a cat and a mouse with comic consequences when truth surfaces.

Men at Work at First Congregational Church Lenten Series
The First Congregational church hosts a School of Living series with a 6:15 church supper followed by a theological lecture by Rev. Helmuth Fichtler on Christian doctrines. Brewington Rites Held Yesterday
Funeral services for Eva Brewington 51 were held at the First Congregational church with Rev. Helmut Fichtler officiating. She died Friday evening in Livingston hospital after an extended illness. Surviving are her husband W H Brewington of Judith Gap, her mother Eva Hughes of Springdale and Judith Gap, three sisters, three brothers, plus nieces and nephews.

Strobel Thompson and Niven were appointed to plan a combined field trip and picnic for woolgrowers and Forest Service personnel tentatively set for August 8 9.

House Defeats Censure Move Over Sergeant at Arms
In Helena the Democratic led House rejected a bid to censure Sergeant at Arms Claude C. Gray of Big Timber for overstepping duties. The resolution, backed by GOP sum of Republicans, cited Gray’s prem ature highway report distribution and alleged conflicts of interest. The vote: 48 Democrats and one Republican opposed, 27 Republicans and others for. The measure aimed to require Gray to confine himself to official duties.

New minister Rev Joseph McDermott takes post at St Josephs
Rev Joseph McDermott, a Derry City native with a thick Irish brogue, became the new priest at St. Josephs Catholic Church on February 1. He was ordained in Thurles on June 14, 1953, and has served in Billings, Miles City, and Sidney before arriving in Big Timber after a major operation.

Chinook Clears Snow as Warm Winds Sweep In

Last Rites Held For C. C. Johnson
Funeral services for Charles Clinton Johnson 82 were held at Lowry Chapel after his death at St Josephs hospital Lewistown. A carpenter and blacksmith he lived in Sweet Grass county for nearly 50 years and built many local buildings. Survivors include son Edgar Stanford daughter Hattie Wingfield step daughter Grace Bryant and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was born in Plainville Wisconsin in 1876 and married Lillian Leary in Billings in 1903.

The chapter backs veterans with socks, bed jackets, pajama sets, cushions, and covers sent to Parks AFB, Walla Walla, and Fort Harrison, under knitting director Mrs. Millie Ellis and sewing head Mrs. Fran McDonald.

Liquor Store Burglarized. Whisky Missing in Early Morning Break-In
The liquor store was entered by breaking a front window between 5 and 6 am. A state liquor inspector and Vendor John Murphy found a case of whisky and several bottles missing on Tuesday. John Murphy arrived about 8:15 am to discover the scene. Chas McDonnell had seen the broken window earlier. Sheriff Thompson is investigating.
