Montana columnist Grace Renfield laments persistent cold and wind as she compares Montana weather to Oklahoma and Missouri. She muses on forecasts and travel, noting guests feel pity for Montana winters while admitting winter is winter and staying home is cheaper.
Mrs. J. H. Gunderson, 78, former Melville resident, died at her Livingston home. Funeral services were held at Lowry Chapel conducted by Rev. Wm. A. Hood with music by Mrs. Busha and Mrs. Nicholson. Burial was in Mountain View. Surviving are her husband, a son Earl Miller of Bozeman, a daughter Mrs. J. V. McGuire of Tacoma, three brothers Warren Hamlin and William Hamlin and Janes Hamlin, and two grandchildren Tommie and Rocque Miller.
Lewistown Ed Furnish, foreman of the Lewistown fish hatchery, stopped briefly in Big Timber yesterday.
John M. Carney 55 longtime public welfare supervisor in Sweet Grass county died Monday after bronchial pneumonia. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Lowry Chapel with Rev. Hood. interment Mountain View. Survived by mother Mary Carney. sister Grace Carney. niece Jean Yardley. nephews Jack, Dan, Ray, and Michael Yardley. widow Pearl Nickeson, married 1941 in Columbus.
Mrs Sid Fraser was elected president of the County Federation of Women’s Clubs at the library basement meeting on Tuesday. Other officers named were Mrs Henry Hausserman as vice president and Mrs Joe Reidelbach secretary with Mrs Wright Ewan treasurer. A potluck lunch followed a 10:30 am start. Bridger Creek Senior Club organized the dinner and program, featuring vocal numbers by Carla Wulf with Esther O Toole and Carol Rein with Helen Rein, and a Safe Driving talk by Patrol Sergeant Bill Benson of Bozeman.
Mr and Mrs Ed Ostrom have leased East Side Grocery from Francis L Jones and will open Monday. Ostrom, a ten year construction worker, invites all to coffee and doughnuts. Store hours are 8 am to 9 pm daily including Sundays and holidays.
Arn old Breck reports Fairview Dairy is in full operation after a favorable milk analysis from the Montana Livestock Sanitary Board. Bacterial count under 3000, other tests favorable, with a modern plant and 30 cows milking. Raw milk delivered daily by truck.
Police in Twin Falls, Idaho investigated a man who appeared to be having a fit in the street. Officer Angus A. Spence responded and learned the man was trying to operate a water tap set in a hole in the road, not suffering a medical episode.
Birta Crockett visited here during the weekend with her parents Mr. and Mrs. F. F. Crockett. She is attending Billings Business College.
Rev. A. E. Erickson announced Rev. Paul Seagraves will succeed Rev. J. G. Sealey as pastor of the Church of God in Big Timber. Seagraves arrives from Chetopa Kansas after revivals here and in Great Falls. He is a West Virginia native with two young sons and is a skilled musician. His first sermon is set for February 17.
Governor J Hugo Aronson urges Montanans to observe National Electrical Week February 10 to 16 as a tribute to Thomas A Edison on his 110th birthday. He notes Montana’s hydroelectric projects Cochran Dam and Noxon Rapids Dam advance state growth and praises the people who provide reliable electrical service and related industries.
The Stillwater Sweet Grass National Farm Loan association will hold its annual meeting on Friday March 1 in Columbus. A noon dinner will be served by the Congregational church Ladies Aid, with H Ben Tetlie presiding. C C Upton regional manager of the Federal Land Bank will speak. A brief business session will cover progress and the election of two associate directors, with terms expiring for Jake Frank and Oscar H Braaten.
Big Timber lost to Absarokee Huskies 90 65 in a conference game as Berg led with 24 points and Lomeland 9. Absarokee’s Borland poured 28. In a non conference loss, Anaconda Central beat the Herder 82 71 with Hauge scoring 18. The B squad fell 52 50 to Laurel.
The late Col. Wallis Huidekoper bequeathed about 275 Western Americana volumes to Montana State College library. The collection, housed in the rare book room, reflects cattle industry interests and ties to notable figures like Charley Russell and Theodore Roosevelt.
Contributions totaling 120.71 have been received by Mrs. Ben Osness, chairman of the coffee parties for the March of Dimes. Rural hosts plan to entertain when roads open. two hostesses included men among guests. A long list of contributing ladies is named.
The Montana Picnic at Mesa Arizona drew 1,437 attendees in a Sunday event. Missoula county led with 127 participants followed by Flathead and Park counties. Notables from Sweet Grass included George Erickson and many local residents. L A Kohlmeier of Whitefish was elected president.
The Legion basketeers erased a four point halftime deficit with a 26 point fourth quarter to defeat Billings Conoco Oilers 76 to 69 on Sunday. Graham led with 27 points, Dodds 20, Reidelbach 15, others scoring solidly as country kids beat town graders 34 to 19 in preliminary.
Montana senators advance bills to boost welfare funds citing possible federal Aid for state welfare programs. Sen. Carl Lehrkind Jr. says the measure could add about 300 dollars a year to each welfare recipient while Helena contends the move unlocks up to 500 thousand dollars annually for state use.
Great Falls resident William James Nelson, 40, was arrested by Sheriff Osborne and Under Sheriff Groom early Wednesday at the Grey Cliff Store. Clarence Flattum reported a midnight break in via a coal chute, then guarded the exterior while officers searched. no evidence of the large safe being disturbed was found.
The Big Timber Jaycees host national vice president Larry Woodworth of Kent Washington for a coffee stop at Boulder cafe Friday 10 to 11 am. Woodworth also plans breakfast with the Billings Jaycees 7 am lunch with Livingston Jaycees noon and a Friday evening banquet with the Butte Jaycees.
J R Kaiserman recounts how a circus elephant cooling off in a ditch three miles from the Boulder river powered plant led to a brief blackout in Big Timber. He, circus handlers and others coaxed the elephant to move the water ditch, restoring lights as water reached the turbine. Skepticism followed the tale.
Mr and Mrs Robert McKenzie on a vacation trip south report they are having a fine time. They spent a night with the Roy Snyders at Marana Arizona and are now heading home via California.
The permanent hospital board elected January 21 includes John Yost Wright Ewan Ed Bieber Lloyd Severance and Karl Bryan. Ed Bieber was named president with Karl Bryan as vice president and Mrs Severance as secretary treasurer for a one year term. The board met with county commissioners to discuss a hospital lease and a $25 membership donation from Leta Krohne increases total memberships to 362. Potential members are urged to join via Mrs Lloyd Severance or any board member.
The Montana Power crew fought through deep drifts after a line break near Gibson last Friday. Walt Huffman located the break by plane around 4 p.m. and the team finished at 2 15 a.m. in 21 below weather. Icing caused the break, with Wally McArthur Fran MacDonald Harry McComb and a Livingston crew assisting. They also freed a Harlowton car stuck in a drift after returning to the highway.
The 47th anniversary of Scouting in America is February 8. National Scout Week runs February 6 to 12 with Scouts wearing uniforms during the week and at Scout Sunday February 10. Cub Scouts in Big Timber attend church services. Boy Scouts meet at the Church of God. Forty Cub Scouts are registered in Pack 21 and 16 Scouts in the local troop.
