Herders Split Weekend Wins Move to 7-8 Overall

The Sweet Grass County High School Herders boosted their conference mark to 5-5 and overall to 7-8 with a 78-60 win over Absarokee and a 53-51 upset of Columbus on a last second layup by Jim Luttschwager. Goosey led with 17 points, Bonnarens 16, while Columbus' Cosgriffe scored 22. The B and C squads posted wins as well, with prep for Red Lodge and Huntley Project games upcoming.

Stephens Receives Trophy For Rural Raiders Second Place

The Rural Raiders earned second place in the Jay cee Grade School basketball tournament with Marv Stephens, RA coach, receiving the trophy. Players came from four rural schools and coach will decide the trophy’s disposition. Columbus grade school won the tournament held last weekend in Big Timber.

The Rural Raiders took second in the Big Timber JC tournament January 22 to 24, losing 49 to 22 to the Columbus Cubs in the final. Raiders coach Marvin Stephens praised for his dedication and effort, with team members Ken Laubach Darrel Stutterheim Bill Murray Victor Gibby Duane Myrstol Kirk Schuster Danny Tronrud Olen Raisland Charles Holycross Brian Schuster John Duncan Bret Goosey David Holye cross. Drain led the Cubs with 20 points while Brian Schuster had 14 for the Raiders.

Reports cover a padlock theft at a service station, a break in at L Spencer ranch, two hitchhikers found in a farmer’s car near Big Timber and later cleared of Washington warrants, plus several traffic incidents. Accidents on Hart Street involved R W Hale and Robin Johnson. Kenneth Hogemark backed into a car at Fryes Cafe. Josephine Tengestel collided with Howard Huyser’s parked car. wind toppled a trailer east of town. Patrolman and undersheriff investigated these events.

Fires Reported Around Town Over Weekend

At 8:00 p.m. Friday a car owned by Ginger Stanley of Bozeman burned between Batons Inn and Grey Cliff but no buildings were damaged. At 3:30 Saturday a grass fire near Melville behind the Meville store caused limited damage. At 6:20 p.m. Monday Mrs Alma Cort reported a brush fire below her ranch on the Boulder road with no structures lost.

Komedy Kings Triumph In Local Exhibition Clash

Harlem Komedy Kings won 985 to 57 over Big Timber Independents at the local gym in front of a near capacity crowd. Milton Moore led the Kings with 28 points, followed by Larry Rankin 22, Showboat Buckner 15, James Hicks 14, and Delbert Josey 6. Archie Little top-scored for Big Timber with 15. Proceeds fund a football charging sled for next fall.

Wood Service Held for Reed Point Resident William A. Wood

Funeral services for William A. Wood of Reed Point were conducted Thursday January 29 at 2 p m from the Evangelical Church of Reed Point with Rev. W F Clingman officiating. Interment followed in Reed Point cemetery. Mrs Ed Meroney played the organ and Ed Meroney sang In the Garden and Beyond the Sunset. FFA Team Wins Bronze at Bozeman Winter Fair

The Livestock judging team led by Ron Thomas Joe Bryce Mike Clayton and Allen Laubach earned bronze in Livestock and Wool and in team judging at the Bozeman Winter Fair. Allen Laubach also won high individual judge honors at the 1970 Winter Fair.

Olga K. Sandsness 84 died Monday at Stillwater Community Hospital Columbus from a coronary after ten days as a patient. Funeral at Lowry Funeral Home this afternoon at 2 p m with Rev Eugene W Nilsen of Big Timber Lutheran Church officiating. Interment Mountain View cemetery. Born May 19 1885 in Larvik Norway she came to Melville 1892 lived near Glasson and Big Timber then moved to Melville area then Big Timber in 1940. Gold Star mother survived by two sons Henry S Sandsness Eugene Sandsness a daughter Phyllis Hanson 15 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

Vocational Council to Meet at SGHS February 11

The SGHS Vocational Advisory Council schedules a meeting February 11 at 8 p m in the Vocational Agriculture department to discuss expanding the program. The January 28 session reviewed current training and recommended a two man department with an expanded study course for vocational education.

Rehberg Seeks GOP Nomination for U S House Seat

State Senator Jack Rehberg announces his candidacy for the Republican nomination to represent Montana’s Eastern District in the U S House. A Montana State University graduate and longtime legislator, he has served in both the state Senate and House and held party leadership roles. The Big Timber Lions Club watched a KULR-TV produced film featuring the Boulder river area and sites to Independence and the Yeager mine during Tuesday noon meeting. MSU Livestock Judging Team Places Fifth at National Show

Ole Oiestad of Big Timber was on the Montana State University Livestock Judging Team which finished fifth in carload judging of beef sheep and swine at the National Western Livestock Show in Denver. The team ranked second in Hereford cattle judging among 19 collegiate teams from Iowa to California.

Hayden Furgason of Montana State University will speak at the Sweet Grass Soil and Water Conservation District annual meeting at the Legion hall at 7 30 p m on February 11. Montana Beef Week Observed With Promotions and Events
