A large delegation from Sweet irass county will hear Charles B. Shuman president of the American Farm Bureau Federation address a meeting on Tuesday evening February 16 at Moose hall in Harlowton. Shuman a Sullivan Illinois farmer, University of Illinois agriculture graduate, 270 acre farm operator with Angus herd, was elected to the federation board in 1945 and president in December 1954, reelected in 1957. He and his wife have five children and he has long served in Sullivan church and 4 H leadership.
Casey Tibbs comments on the first rodeo of 1960 at Odessa Texas. Trail's End a serrel gelding from Oral Zumwalt's string won the silver halter and is praised as an honest bucking horse. Zumwalt drew Dallas and Montana season themes with Santa lookalikes and famous figures noted in a colorful column.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Davis of Ritzville Washington are spending a few days at the home of their son Robert Davis.
George Green a Bilings TV newscaster will be guest speaker at the Reed Point Memorial Library club meeting in the Reed Point gym Monday evening at 8. The event is open to the public and follows his recent tour of Russia with other U.S. broadcasters. Refreshments will be served.
The Reed Plant Memorial club hosted a Federation of Women's clubs meeting in the library club room. Mrs. Percy Huntley presided as business session leader before lunch, with reports on the library project. readings by Mrs. Broadwater and Mrs. Swift, plus a poem by Mrs. Burton Smith and a piano solo by Roberta Cremer.
Col Felix M. Hardison presents a letter naming Bennie Green of Melville as a distinguished Air Force ROTC cadet at Montana State. Green, a senior in agricultural education and deputy wing commander, meets criteria including leadership, moral character, campus leadership, and upper one third academic standings in military subjects, his graduating class, and ROTC training.
The Modern Meat Packing company unloads 24 000 Australian lambs from the Delfino at Norwalk California destined for quarantine and fattening before meat packing. Ship owner James Delfino faces criticism from U S livestock men over potential economic impact on domestic producers.
Ralph Ryan, a 15 year veteran of county road service, was named Monday by the county commissioners as supervisor to succeed Arthur Berg, who retired after nearly 30 years on the road crew and a five year tenure as supervisor following Henry Elgen’s resignation.
A. W. Kamhoot of Forsyth district governor of Lions International will be principal speaker at the local club's ladies night banquet Saturday evening at the Moose hall. Lion Secretary Scott Hoskinson will present a history of the club and membership awards.
At the annual Big Timber Lutheran meeting the congregation approved a budget of 17884.60 for the year. The treasurer reported receipts of 19062.65 from 232 contributors and the pastor noted a net gain of 40 members with a 24 member loss, bringing baptized membership to 683. Lowell Gibson was re elected president with officers including Stephen Ollestad vice president and Helen Dahl secretary.
Sufficient interest at the first meeting prompts a full series of Land Economics lessons for credit. Dr. Holse of Montana State College will instruct. Classes start Monday evening February 8 at the courthouse and run weekly until completed. Registration remains open after the launch. Teachers from Gibson Melville Duck Creek and Big Timber areas have enrolled.
Beverly Mary Rezendes, daughter of Manuel R. Rezendes Jr. of East Providence Rhode Island, will wed Jerome Edward Bowman son of William C. Bowman of Bozeman. Both hold high school diplomas with college work and are employed in public works and cabinetry. The wedding is set for May 21 at Saint Xavier Church in East Providence.
William Johnstone acting dean of the division of education at Montana State College will speak at a public meeting on proposed state school district reorganization. The February 8 gathering at 7 30 p m in the hot lunch room of the high school is open to all interested. He sits on the governor's committee shaping 1961 legislation and will outline potential directions and local impact. An open forum will follow for questions and local concerns.
The annual mid winter conference of the Women of the Moose was held in Big Timber Sunday under the auspices of the college of regents. A 12 o clock luncheon was served by the Big Timber unit with registration in charge of Mrs. Orville Wulff. Mrs. Carl Mosness led ritualistic work in the afternoon and Mrs. Dan Laubach led the investiture ceremony. Three college of regents members received red stoles. Invited chapters came from Red Lodge Livingston Bozeman and Livingston. A social hour followed with program chairs leading.
Big Timber marks Boy Scout Week February 7 13 with local emphasis on Cub Scouts thriving while troop leadership is scarce. Banquet planned February 12 at 7 PM in parish hall with Orvin Flare guest speaker and past leaders to be honored. National and historical notes honor the movement begun in 1910 and commemorations including a Washington monument fund.
The Yellowstone Valley indoor rifle matches will be held in Big Timber in February 1952. Shooters from western states and Canadian provinces have participated before, with Fort Carson unit from Colorado entering a 14 man team led by Stan ford S. Brantley. Local sponsors Frye's Cafe Motel Western Starr Motors will award team trophies and about 200 dollars in medals. Legion Club adds team awards. The event, started in 1951, has grown each year.
Jerry J. Davis of Bozeman won first in the annual Schutzen tournament at the Rifle and Pistol club range. L W Wigger Jr of Bozeman and Clarence Boyle of Ryegate followed in master class, with scores 957 948 946. In sharpshooter and expert classes local shooters claimed top spots. In international matches David M. Bisch led master class with 287, while Donald Beckman and George Damasco trailed.
The Big Timber Sheepherders lost 58 to 51 at Harlo and 47 to 35 at Red Lodge. Injuries and tough defense left Big Timber tied for third with Red Lodge, while Harlo remained just ahead. Gallahan led Harlo with 30 points. Smart, Boe and Anderson paced Big Timber.
Tina Goldbranson 78 a Livingston area resident for over 30 years died Thursday afternoon at Memorial hospital after a short illness. Funeral services were Monday at Franzen chapel with Rev. Peder Waldum officiating. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery. Surviving are two daughters two sisters two brothers and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In Justice Court Clayton H Purcell released on 150 dollar bond on charge of giving beer to minors trial set for Feb 10. Harold Funk Ronald Woodhouse Alvin Burg Arthur E Staudt Loren E Green R W Kaufmann Pat J Walsh Sherman D Schaforitz Leo Farsworth Donna A Turner Casimir Mercinisk Donald O Olson John J Henry fined 15 dollars for exceeding night speed limit. Radar checks conducted most arrests. Richard Pilch 10 dollars for improper passing Tom McCrorey 10 dollars for driving vehicle with improper license plates.
An Angus steer owned by Gary Thompson of Melville, a member of the Big Timber Future Farmers of America, was named reserve grand champion in the fat cattle division at the Montana Winter Fair in Bozeman. Jimmy McDonald of Cascade won the grand championship with a Hereford steer. The fat stock show set a record with 184 head. Clarence Todd of Reed Point claimed top honors in the Galloway show with his grand champion bull Clarence's Champ, while Todd's Wanda, owned by Don Todd of Reed Point, was named grand champion female in the division.
