Montana Hog and Wheat Outlook from State Report
Montana farmers report hogs and pigs on hand down 1 percent from a year earlier, totaling 235 000 on farms with breeding stock at 31 000. Market hogs stood at 204 000. Wheat acreage seeded to winter wheat rose 18 percent to 2.6 million acres, with 1974 production forecast at 72.5 million bushels, the third largest on record. A bottleneck in beef pipelines could occur if trucking capacity tightens, said Montana Stockgrowers Association president Julian Terrett Jr., urging a national truck clearing house to reduce empty backhauls.

Montana Grain Production Falls While Value Rises in 1973
Montana growers produced 167 million bushels of wheat barley and oats in 1973 valued at 529 million dollars. This compares with 175 million bushels and 273 million last year. Wheat 97 million bushels worth 391 million, barley 60 million worth 126 million, oats 10.3 million bushels valued at 11.8 million. Nationally wheat oats and barley output reached 2.8 billion bushels valued at 8076 million, up from 2660 million and 3720 million in the prior year.
