Bill Townsend Dies In Christmas Eve Crash
Bill Townsend aged 23 of Laurel died in a Christmas Eve auto crash nine miles east of Columbus. He was alone, likely sleeping at the wheel, the car rolling several times before ending on its side. He died before reaching a hospital. Townsend, born December 23 1933 in Livingston, had lived in Big Timber most of his life and played on the high school basketball team. He was a PN employee at Laurel and leaves wife Solveig Thompson, son Bruce, and his parents. Funeral services were held at Lowry Chapel with Rev. Bennet and Rev. Barker officiating. interment Mountain View.

A Shell Oil Co seismograph crew of seventeen or more families is relocating to Big Timber. They will occupy the former Klindt Pharmacy and C. C. Johnson buildings for housing trucks and equipment. Four Big Timber seismograph workers join Jim McKenzie Ray Swanson Glenn Blair and Irwin Solland. Arrival expected around January 2 with seven trailer houses. housing may be secured nearby. The representative said the crew could remain a year or longer.

Grade school concert charms Big Timber crowd
The grade school band led by Mrs Edith Malcolm and the operetta The Magic Christmas Bell plus the grade school chorus conducted by Miss Esther O Toole delighted a capacity audience Thursday evening at the Big Timber grade school auditorium. Every child from first to sixth grade wore clever costumes. From Richland Mr and Mrs Harry Preston and their son are visiting relatives for the holidays. Harry returned to Richland but Mrs Preston and son will stay longer.

A blaze at the Grosfield Kiewit Cattle Co ranch on Swamp Creek destroyed a barn corrals and bunk house early this morning. Big Timber firefighters arrived before six and fought winds and sparks that ignited a haystack and hillside fires. Horses were saved though saddles burned. origin undetermined.

Nearly all businesses in Big Timber will be closed next Monday and Tuesday, the day before New Year’s and New Year’s Day. Mrs. Harvey Kurzhals arrived Sunday from Ogden Utah to spend the holidays with her mother Mrs. Art Berg. Mrs. Berg, a Community hospital patient for about four months, was returned to her home for care.
