The 1903 Christmas Eve issue had no holiday mention with ads or programs. Later 1904 and 1905 issues show momentum with school programs and church services. Grocery ads appear and Kellogg’s Cash Grocery notes Santa Claus would be in.
Santa Claus will make his annual pre Christmas visit to Big Timber Saturday afternoon at 1 o clock. He will arrive on the Big Timber Fire Department truck and will distribute treats to the youngsters at the Legion hall. The visit is sponsored by the Big Timber Lions club with cooperation from local merchants. Candy nuts and apples were prepared at a Lions meeting at Frye's cafe.
The Pioneer store on the 24th dispenses treats to all children under 12. During those years the store was under the management of J. E. Sheridan.
Rural and upper grade schools showcase Christmas programs with songs, recitations, and choral readings. Participants include Dawna Bainter, Peggy Scholten, Debby Shay, and many others as schools like Day Creek Grey Cliff Bridge and Lower Day Fork host events through December 21 to 22 with Santa present and a community gathering.
Big Timber drops two league games to Forsyth and Lodge Grass, leaving the Herders 0-2 in conference play. Rich Paulson led Forsyth with 21 points, while Bernard Covers Up paced Lodge Grass with 15. Coach Bergquist noted poor free throw shooting and rebounding cost two games as Absarokee looms.
The Evangelical United Brethren church elected officers for the year including Phil Shuman as Sunday school superintendent and Walter McBride as chief usher. Other posts covered lay leadership, treasurers, secretary roles, music and youth leadership, plus WSWS and Ladies Aid officers.
The High School presents Christmas and Its Music on December 22 at 8:00 P M in the school gym. The program features the High School Band directed by Robert Woolley performing carols and European legends, and the High School Chorus directed by Frances Schriver.
Rev Andrew A Holbeck 82 longtime pastor of the Big Timber and Melville Lutheran churches died at his Ray North Dakota home after a month illness. He was born May 27 1882 in Mandal Norway and educated in the United States becoming a minister in 1913. He served Billings Deary Ida Northfield Minn St Olaf and Ray before dying. Survivors include two daughters Mrs Bruce Thomas Minot ND and Constance near Ray plus grandchildren.
Gerald Ebelt son of Mr and Mrs Roland J Ebelt will be ordained into the American Lutheran ministry Sunday December 27 at 11 a m in Zion Lutheran Glendive Dr R A Daehlin president of Rocky Mountain district will ordain Rev James Hanson pastor of Zion Lutheran will be liturgist Other clergymen include Rev N S Magelssen from New Ulm Minnesota and Rev Melville L Olson from Richey Ebelt a Dawson County High School graduate 1955 earned a BS from Montana State University 1960 and entered Luther Theological Seminary He also attended Army Chaplains School in 1964 after ordination he and wife Kathleen Beley of Big Timber and their daughter Kay Robyn will reside in Hingham where he has a pastorate to the Hingham Kreml in Lutheran parish.
Sweeney arrives from Den ven to spend a few days visiting longtime friends and catching up on local happenings.
Mr and Mrs William R Kemp of Bozeman announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter Barbara Jean Kemp to Arden Mitchell Berg son of Ben Berg and Mrs Ann Bainter of Livingston. The ceremony is scheduled for Saturday December 19 at 2 pm with a reception to follow at the Lutheran church.
The town of Big Timber saw a sharp fall from 44 degrees to minus 25 by mid afternoon, with buses leaving early as temperatures kept sinking. Unofficial readings ranged 25 to 30 below overnight, and no rise above zero was seen the next day as a brisk west wind blew. Court house readings show a sequence of daily highs and lows from December 9 to December 15, including a 58 degree high and minus 19 to 44 degree lows.
The Lions defeated Harlowton 56 to 13 in the main game while the Lions seventh graders won 31 to 16. Fuller led scoring with 23 points, backed by Hauge 8 and others. The Big Timber seventh graders led throughout with increasing margins and set up a rematch against Bozeman teams next Saturday morning at the high school gym.
Readings, carols, and nativity scenes marked Christmas observances at several churches. The Evangelical United Brethren, Big Timber Lutheran, St. Joseph’s Catholic, and First Congregational offered musical programs, recitations, and children’s specials on December 20 with volunteers guiding youth choirs, lessons, and holiday understudy tasks.
In a strong visiting week seven of eight league games were won away from home. Huntley Project led with a big 81-60 win over Roundup, while Forsyth and Lodge Grass posted road double wins to stay in a four way tie for first. Red Lodge split tests with Absarokee and Cody, and Roundup fell to Harlowton 70-56. Lodge Grass leads with 3 0 records, Forsyth, Huntley Project, and Red Lodge close behind at 3 0 or 30.
About forty Harlowton sportsmen and officials from Wheatland and Golden Valley Farm Bureaus and the Castle Mountain Sportsmen’s Association met in Harlowton to discuss the two deer limit for surrounding hunting areas. The meeting heard that biologists from the fish and game department have the final say on season length. Legislation allowing a two deer limit east of the continental divide expires and must be renewed every two years. West of the divide legislators oppose the limit, while east of the divide allies must be convinced to amend to rebuild deer herds.
