General Miles’s winter expedition against the Ogallala and Cheyenne along Tongue River began after a patrol captured three Cheyenne women and four children. The fight featured scouts LaForge Old Bear Half Yellow Face Buffalo Horn and guide Yellowstone Kelly as Miles’s forces used rifles and a machine gun to hold off sustained Cheyenne arrows and bullets. The encounter ended with nightfall and the Cheyenne collective retreat while Big Crow perished in the fighting.
