Mrs. Henry Elgen recounts how Dr Standish flew her from Big Timber to Billings for treatment during a flood that closed highways. The rapid ambulance alternative would have meant a 220 mile detour. She also praises the local airport enabling visits from her Connecticut based brother.
Neil Bolt and his wife were given a farewell gift of money and an anniversary plate at Melville ALCW Christmas family night in Big Timber. Rev. Ocee Johnson noted the Bolts’ strong community ties as they plan to sell their Wheeler Creek ranch. The event featured carols and Advent talks after a pot luck supper.
Mrs Julia Wood widow of James Wood died at Sweet Grass Community hospital after a long illness. Funeral arrangements await arrival of family members.
Mrs. Helen Stebbins traveled from Helena to visit her mother, Mrs. Inez Jarrett, at the Pioneer Home over the weekend.
Big Timber opened the 1967-68 conference basketball season with a 66 55 victory over Columbus. Jack Fuller led the Herders with 22 points while Fallang 14 rebounds topped the boards. Absarokee visit Friday in what could be a tough home tilt.
George Washington Ellington, 75, of Manhattan, was killed instantly Thursday morning when his westbound car slid on a slick U S highway near the Boulder River bridge about 9 15. An intense snowstorm blanketed the area as funeral plans began with cousin Tom Cox assisting. the body was moved to Dokken Nelson Funeral Home in Bozeman for burial at Custer Battlefield National Cemetery.

Mrs John Yost and Mrs Thorvald Anderson received service awards as 4H leaders from 4H Council President Bill Sargent. Yost 23 years and Anderson 20 years. The recognition program, planned by Junior Builders, drew about 350 attendees and featured square dancing after the program. Lloyd Berg, president of the South Central District 4H Leaders Conference, presented the leader awards.
Theresa Barber and Rick Jarrett, both honored by S.G.H.S. faculty, are the two most outstanding high school teens submitted for statewide competition. A state winner would earn a governor’s trophy and advance to nationals with ten overall winners receiving $1000 scholarships.
Funeral services for 86 year old Mrs. Inga Wullum were held at Big Timber Lutheran church with Rev. Ocee Johnson officiating. She died Thursday at Sweet Grass Community hospital after a brief illness and fall at home. Born in Christiansund Norway she lived in Sweet Grass county since 1894 and was a charter member of the church. Survivors include three children Signy Deeney Helen Brekke Herbert Wallum a brother a granddaughter and a grandson.
Petition drive by the Jaycees gathered 448 signatures to trigger a county special election on a proposed airport bond project for improvements. Voters are urged to register at the courthouse and participate, with transportation and assistance offered to boost turnout. Some residents oppose the proposal and are urged to vote in January. Dr Don Henke stresses that voting is the way to learn true public opinion.
Nina Mae Stonefield a native of Big Timber Mont aged 80 died Thanksgiving morning at Pioneer Memorial hospital Heppner. Memorial services were held at Sweeney Mortuary Chapel with Rev Father Raymond Beard officiating. Interment followed in Heppner Masonic cemetery. She leaves a son, daughter, four brothers, two sisters, six granddaughters, ten grandsons and twenty six great grandchildren. Pallbearers were her grandsons.
Two tax study groups in substantial agreement on the effects of a proposed initiative. The Montana Fairer Taxes Assn. led by Robert D. Watt of Missoula and the Montana Taxpayers Assn. led by S. Keith Anderson of Helena say the measure would effectively eliminate property taxes on household goods, merchants inventories, farm held products, and solvent credits. Continued on page Eight.

Big Timber Explorer Post 521 staged a realistic search and rescue drill on Roger Whidden ranch. A dummy hunter was dropped. 17 members searched four square miles from 8:15 to 10:20 am finding a wounded man who wrote a note and thanked the rescuers.
Last rites were held Tuesday at Lowry Chapel for Ollie Mae Overby 69 who died Friday at Sweet Grass Community hospital Burial was in Mountain View cemetery The service included songs The Old Rugged Cross and Beyond the Sunset Pallbearers were Harry Murray Alfred Undheim Oscar Forsythe Harold Esp Bill Kinsey and Walter Broughton Overby born April 21 1898 in Holton Virginia came to Big Timber in 1915 married Henry H Overby Oct 30 1916 Surviving are daughter Vera Roberts three sisters four brothers three grandchildren and two great grandchildren Mr Overby died in December 1965.
