Ryegate Rancher Sentenced To Hang December 30
Ryegate rancher Lee Simpson was scheduled for execution December 30 for the murder of Deputy Sheriff Arthur Burford. District Judge W L Ford set the date after a trial conviction in September 1938, with a prior stay pending appeal to the state supreme court. Burford died after a prolonged gun battle at the Simpson ranch on April 14, 1938. Attorneys planned to appeal to Governor Roy E Ayers to seek clemency.
