A historic rain and snow event broke an extended drought, refilling dry water holes and boosting pasture growth. The region saw fires near Upper Deer Creek reduce with rain and snow, easing fear of forest devastation as Forest Supervisor Lantry noted the blaze had gone beyond control and required heavy rainfall to quell.
Last Friday afternoon August 16 the Northern Pacific wool warehouse burned completely. Sparks from a locomotive caused the blaze with some crediting train No 5. The wind helped spread flames but the iron sheathing kept the blaze from larger spread. The fire confined to the wool house with only a scorched fence loss. Wool and other stored goods including 9000 pounds of wool belonging to William Dailman were destroyed. A carload of salt owned by J J Kusey also burned.
Prof Homer Derr and family have arrived from Butte and will head the county free high school as principal. Mrs Derr will teach home science, a new department focusing on cooking sewing and housekeeping. Opening is postponed from Sept 5 to Sept 12 to impart practical knowledge and emphasize sciences and practical study over the classics.
Helena August 24 Two new fair features announced for the Eighth Annual Montana State Fair September 26 to October 1 include daily aeroplane ascensions by Curtiss with a minimum of fifty feet and ten minutes aloft and a long distance potential flight. A Western cowboy relay race is also planned with three mile daily legs and saddled changes in front of the grandstand.
The Pioneer notes fixed dates for Republican primaries on Sept 3 and county convention on Sept 12. Voters are urged to support clean efficient government and protect American industries and workers. Notices will detail precinct locations and urging full participation in delegate elections.
Receipts of western rangers last week totaled 13 000, with beef steer prices rising 35 to 50 cents. Dana Wyomings sold up to 7, common grades at 4.25, most 4.90 to 5.75. Cows and heifers rose to 5.00 top, bulk 3.50 to 4.75. Sheep and lambs totaled 99 800. top lambs 7, sheep 4.50, week end lambs 6.85, sheep 4.40, yearlings 5.40 to 5.60. Demand strong for feeding and breeding stock. breeding ewes to 6. Yearling ewes valued to 6.
The Sweet Grass county fair promises a strong entry field across races with top eastern Montana animals. Performances include three balloon ascensions and a daily high wire act between heats, plus numerous exhibits and diversions. Concessions and restaurants are assured, with aim to set a new standard of excellence.
