Letter from Guy E. Mitchell arguing against government irrigation. He cites private capital limits, proposes a dam and canal system funded by government, with land sold to settlers at cost, to reclaim 71 to 100 million acres and spur eastern factory demand and western settlement.
State Superintendent Welch issues a circular to trustees stressing strict enforcement of the compulsory education law. Children 8 to 14 must attend at least twelve weeks per year, with six weeks consecutive, unless exempt for sickness home instruction completed grades lack of facilities or parental clothing inability. Fines up to 25 dollars may be imposed on parents trustees or clerks for noncompliance. Clerks must file attendance lists within twenty days after school starts.
Beginning September 18 at Red Lodge in Carbon County the board of state land commissioners will auction lands it controls across Montana. Hundreds of thousands of acres are offered at not less than ten dollars per acre with sales planned in every county to raise funds for state institutions' debt relief.
Peter Siems railway contractor, recently offered the Billing to Great Falls extension, was summoned to St Paul for talks with railway officials. He has been in Washington directing Great Northern branch prep for the Republic district and traveled through Havre. He believes he may be asked again to undertake the Billing to Great Falls contract if labor guarantees are provided, with construction likely to start soon.
